The director was a woman, the movie was supposed to be funny, and Bateman in the movie is supposed to be exactly the meme you describe so he could serve as a commentary on the situation of people taking book Bateman's shit seriously. There's an interview where she has to literally say that he's an unreliable narrator and the events are how he imagines them, the prostitutes wouldn't have been that attractive, etc.
