There were one or two thread on this game almost a decade ago, but rather than necro those short threads, I figured I’d start a new one.

LISA: the Painful(and it’s sequel, the Joyful) were one of those indie games that came out in the mid-2010’s and got a strong cult following, due to the story, gameplay, and amount of party members you could potentially get. And the updated version coming out tomorrow seems to be added a lot.

  • HD graphics & updated UI
  • Next gen functionalities including Nintendo Switch HD Rumble, PlayStation DualSense haptics, light bar, & adaptive triggers, DualShock 4/DualSense speaker audio
  • 120 FPS mode for PC and next gen consoles
  • New enemies and bosses to challenge
  • New stories, multiple story endings
  • 20+ new songs
  • Music Player
  • Localized to 12+ languages
  • Painless (story) mode
  • New border art overlays
  • Pixel perfect int scaling option
  • Secrets
  • and more!
Along with coming out on literally any current gaming console/PC service, apparently if you already own the original, it will update to the definitive version free of charge.

So that’s neat.

Love the music and atmosphere of the game. It's a shame that ever since 2016 elections and the death of his father, the dev got buck broken
so hard and wasn't the same since then.

I need to play it one day. The RPG Maker look really looked bad
The Definitive Edition gets released tomorrow on Steam

I've always wanted to play it cuz I heard good things about it and saw some gameplay while I was in middle school (never saw the RPG maker ver) is the RPG maker verison really that bad??

Let's talk about some fangames that most of the time get cancelled, are in development hell or when they release are either jokes or remixes of another ones:
The only two that I played and are deemed "finished" is Hopeful and Vegaful:
Hopeful is very well known has a basic plot and is basically about a trio of friends trying to get laid, for one of the first fangames is very enjoyable:
Lisa the Vegaful is a bit more about fanservice and adress the Vega gang from Joyful fighting other gangs before Buddy wrecked everyone, less polished than Hopeful but still alright:
For unfinished ones, the most famous one is Lisa the Pointless, a very polished fan-game with an interesting gimmick that revolves about messing with enemy stats but at the same time provides an on-rails experience:
Lisa the Timeless also has their own take on the Lisa the Pointless dynamic but with Fire and Dodge mechanics, somehow I ended enjoying more than Pointless, maybe because it provided a more simplistic plot rather than showing multiple characters and factions and doing nothing with them:
I only played an older version of Lisa the Unbreakable, I remember being a bit unbalanced, buggy and had a messy plot, the newer version released early this year seemingly fixed most of the issues, the game is more focused on exploring and has a lot of pop culture references to other games:
Desolate Expanse is a mod that adds more areas and fights to Painful, is quite enjoyable for what it is but the novelty quickly wears it off after the first playthrough, worth it at least a try but hardly a "definitive experience":
Scholar of Wilbur Sin is a complete overhaul from Pointless, it is great but hard as fuck and full of missable content, never managed to finish, it completely overshadows the original fangame by making fully explorable areas and ditching the original on-rails experience:
Fangames that were recently announced and I doubt that will be finished anytime soon:
Lisa the Wise, a couple trying to survive the wasteland:
Lisa the Fool, a retelling of Painful:
Lisa the Reckless, where the mod author recklessly shoehorn references from unfinished/cancelled Lisa fangames:

That's like the both the weirdest and ironic part of this game and it's sphere is that, the game is known for its very dark humor and has fuckton of elements such as drug abuse, violence, sexual abuse (at least mentioned in the backstory), which you'd think it wouldn't attract those types considering how much years they spend bitching on how you don't have use "shocking elements" to make a good story yet, this game somehow did the opposite. It has attracted the most ADHD attention whoring zoomers and trannies, at least during 2014-2016 (the time when the fandom for this game was really active)

The only thing that would be deemed as "woke" from the game now, is
a possible recruit called Queen Rogers, but I wouldn't really deem it woke
because OG game got released during the time when drag queen shit didn't really became mainstream obnoxious and his whole character is
that he's a crossdressing drug addict that runs a brothel where men (who were exiled from the rest of the population) larp as female prostitutes with most interactions there being played for laughs.

The other ironic part is this whole game was done by dude who looks like the Chad meme, yet
it's like someone swapped his brain with that of a redditor soy person that chants whatever mantra is popular
with lefties. What a shame.

There was foreshadowing though. The first footage of (the first 15 minutes of) the final game on youtube was done by some gay inflation furry who was given a copy before release. I assume that they were friends.

E:
About a month before release:
Here's some of his other vids:
Just noticed. He's now trooned out. It never even began for him.

I always wanted to play the games but they seem seriously depressing. I find it hard to actually sit down and play them knowing I'm gonna get bummed out by the end.

Does he honestly believe that Matt Walsh is a proponent of girls getting Botox and boob jobs?

Anyway, last month Dingaling hosted a reddit AMA upon the announcement of the LISA Definitive Edition.

I was quite amused by the one upvoted question he didn't answer:

"AFAB" apparently means “assigned female at birth.”

I remember playing way back, though I don't remember much. I think I stopped around the point you got forced into Russian roulette. Is there some trick to that, or is it just the game killing off a bunch of superfluous party members?

It's the point where you savescum even if you're playing on pain mode. If your luck is bad enough, you can lose your entire roster of party members and get a game over.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just RNG-based. This can lead to some funny moments when you get a string of good rolls, mind.

Shit, it's just pure RNG? I had always thought it was scripted to kill a couple off and then have you win. I guess fucking you over like that does fit the game's theme.

Incidentally, I wonder if the game mechanics will get a patch. There was a fair bit of oddness like buffs being able to miss and poison being stupidly overpowered against bosses. The game is pretty easy to bend over your knee if you know how to exploit status effects.

I wonder if one of the new endings will be if you both go Joyless AND keep all your party members alive.

And here’s some fan stuff.

I tried playing it once, got stuck, and forgot about it. It's on my to-do list. I love the phrase from that one trailer, "a sea of dipshits and perverts."

I'm burned out on re-releases but the idea of the campfire conversations has me very intrigued, I see a lot of potential to flesh out the party members here. I'd love to see more from characters like Terry or Shocklord.
This could also be a good opportunity to rebalance the characters, I remember Birdie being overpowered and a lot of the Joy addicts being really bad in the long run.
On the topic of the dev going woke I'll be amazed if they keep the monkey joke with the black Power Ranger knockoff guy.
