I was living in Washington four winters ago when Donald Trump made way, eventually, for Joe Biden. Something sticks with me from that time. If there had been no access to the news, no knowledge of the election result at all, an alert person walking the streets could still guess that Republicans had left town and that Democrats had moved in. There was a difference in dress. There was a difference in modes of transport. (More cycling.) Above all, there was a difference in common speech.

How so? Well, you were likelier to hear someone vow to be “intentional”. Or use the phrase “redemption arc”. Or accuse a third person of having “main character syndrome”. Or of doing something “performative”. You were likelier to hear “toxic” and “narcissism” and “cosplay” and — more on this in a bit — “gaslighting”. Your date was likelier to say, “I’m an empath”.

If these verbal tics were unique to ultra-neurotic people in one necessarily unusual town, we might leave it there. But four years later, other realms have succumbed to the same speech. Offices. Advertisements. Football podcasts. (“Give Saka his flowers!”) WhatsApp groups. Among certain kinds of graduates in the world’s big anglophone cities, this kind of talk is not that far from being ambient.

Liberals have evolved a language of their own. Or at least a dialect. Those who speak it tend to have no earthly idea how odd it sounds to others, and therefore what a competitive disadvantage it is versus the plain-speaking right. While conservatives have their own argot — “red pill”, “blue pill” — you have to delve quite far into the weirdo fringe to encounter it. Among the megastars such as Joe Rogan, not to mention Donald Trump, what stands out is an Orwellian directness. “Bros” or not, their speech is far closer to the American or Anglosphere median.

What characterises the dialect that we might call Liberalese? First, psychotherapeutic jargon. The spraying around of such concepts as intentionality is an attempt to give things a scientific and even medical veneer by people who mostly studied comparative literature. Second, an unbecoming obsession with transient pop culture. References to the “Beyhive” and to “Brat summer” are lost on much more of the population than liberals think.

Finally, there is the matter of cadence. I have given up my brave war against Upspeak, which is the habit of lifting one’s vocal pitch towards the end of non-interrogative sentences
. The world has won. Except it is not the world, is it? It is progressives and centrists. You hear far fewer conservatives talk like this. Theories vary as to why they so dominate the podcast charts in a 50-50-ish nation. Here’s mine: they are easier on the ear. People who think him a dangerous fool on vaccines will nevertheless take three hours of Rogan over 30 minutes of someone? Who speaks? Like this?

To be clear, Democratic politicians don’t use Liberalese. Kamala Harris didn’t go around saying cosplay this and toxic that. But a party is judged on its proxies too. That is, the pundits, celebrities, scholars, business leaders and online activists who line up with that party. And the left’s proxies do speak in an alienating fog of in-group buzz phrases.

How did this speech emerge? One theory is that it is a class signifier.
Because it is bad form to wear a sandwich board that says “I have a degree”, people evolved linguistic codes that distance themselves from the masses. This was true at the beginning, I suspect, but no longer. There is nothing ostentatious or even all that conscious about the dialect now. No, things are much worse than that. People don’t know they are using it. To pick them up on it would make no more sense than asking a German why they keep putting infinitive verbs at the end of sentences.

Style and substance are linked. If you can’t tell that a word lacks resonance outside of big cities, you can’t tell that a candidate does either. Even I don’t know for sure what “gaslighting” means, and I’m such a cartoon metropolitan that I have a favourite Eurostar seat. Meanwhile, the right is out there, in people’s ears, on their screens and all too easy to understand.

These almost-but-not-quite attempts at self-reflection are getting tiresome. You. Fucking. LOST.
“Hmm yes, I hear you. We lost because our Skibidi rizz was unable to channel the collective zeitgeist. We must engage the deplorables with more intentionality. If only they were able to comprehend our dialectic, maybe they would’ve understood the deep messaging behind ‘Kamala is brat.’ Then they might’ve felt appropriately ashamed of how uneducated they are.”

Liberals regard therapyspeak as the voice of authority. Because they've watched 27,000 hours of Star Trek: Next Generation and have internalized sciency technojargon as the quick fix to every problem of the week.
This but unironically. It's because these people talk like the media they consume. They consume a fuck ton of media. There's this thing people tend to do where their speech patterns will subtly alter themselves to match those of the people they associate with on a regular basis. These people consume so much media that their speech patterns have become a blend of shitty current year TV/movie, famous person dialog mixed with journo speak.

Redditarian upspeak is a vernacular that is grating to anyone who isn't a faggot with ugly glasses and a shitty haircut. These people talk this way because they think it makes them sound "enlightened" and "educated," but it actually comes across as extremely smug and self-serving, almost like they are looking for reddit upvotes IRL.
These retards aren't actually intending to change hearts and minds of those they disagree with, they just want to feel better about themselves for having the "correct opinions." Their gay way of talking is a way to signal membership in an "intellectualist" social class.
They haven't actually arrived to any one of these "opinions" on their own. They just want to fit in with other people that have absolutely nothing going for them other than their unearned sense of superiority.

I hate that I can make sense of what you're saying.

It's mostly just black and fag speech mannerisms being aped by white women. If you ever can't parse a shitlib post, just say it to yourself like a zesty buck and it will immediately make sense.

My conspiracy theory is that they corralled everything this way intentionally. In the 90s and 00s, every form of media and pop culture was either ghetto or gay. So if you were a young man turned off by boy bands etc, your other choice was gangsta rap and Urban Culture.

Fast forward to the woke era and they combined the two, so now everything is this awful sassy ghetto gay singularity, from soccer moms twerking in Kroger ads to ghetto drag troons acting like exaggerations of catty women.

Agreeing with you and the other guy you quoted but I think it's important to note that what you both are saying can be said about a gigantic amount of non-political online speech from completely non-political people.

They might not even know the word liberal and they've been given a language early for when they do start thinking politically. To me this the scariest part.

Maybe someone should have thought about the unintended consequences of only ever consuming media and participating in conversation with people who agree with you.

Did literal fucking nobody every think about how dialects form in the first place? It's proximity, stupid. Distance.

Oh and there's no fixing this. Point and laugh at the funny-talking faggots.

I think a big part of it is 4chan adores terms and words that are esoteric in nature. You can see it with Sneed where it's an esoteric joke that indicates you're part of the club if you use it.

What does Sneed mean anyway?

What does Sneed mean anyway?

It's a reference to L'Jarius Sneed (starting cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs), who is currently in negotiations to purchase 4chan and all of it's associated web properties.

The joke is that the place is called "Sneed's Feed & Seed" which is clever in itself and quite funny to those with a mature sense of humour but what's really just hilarious about it is that if you look closely at the front of this store, Sneed's Feed & Seed, you can see a line that reads "Formerly Chuck's". Now, this might go over the average viewer's head as this, THIS, is peak comedy. I doubt anything will ever be as funny as the joke about Sneed's Feed & Seed. Are you ready for this one? So, like I said, the place is called "Sneed's Feed & Seed" and this sign says "Formerly Chuck's", which means that when Chuck owned the place, well, I don't have to tell you...

It's one thing to talk like a fag with your retard friends, it's another to speak that way in all instances.

Many progressives have lost the ability to distinguish audiences. I suspect this is because of their pathological need to build in group consensus. Their inability to change their linguistic registers is a sign of an uncultured mind.
Progressives are in a cult. They worship at the cathedrals of Scientism and Feminism. They seek progress for the sake of progression. They might be secretly marxists too.

What does Sneed mean anyway?
It's not my job to educate you sweaty.

Just kidding. Sneed is an enigmatic word with many meanings. Sneed has been used interchangeably with the word "seethe," as in, "cope and sneed," or "coping and sneeding."

It is also used to signal participation in certain online subcultures, such as this one. When I see the word "sneed" I know I'm amongst friends.

Sneed is also a funny word. Lol

There's layers to it. It's a single syllable, but there's satisfaction is explaining it legitimately(especially with a third party audience), then satisfaction in explaining it ironically, then more satisfaction explaining within the context of Elder Scrolls lore and CHIM, in Dagoth Ur's voice. And don't even get me started on Moe-posting...

When did "cosplay" become a word liberals use? That word came from Japan and weebs adopted it.

Metokur's Tumblrisms is going to be necessary in understanding Liberal dialogue. Its just that insane.
