It's a quick and easy way to mentally defang any criticism of the lgbt movement. If someone doesn't like gays, or lesbians, or what have you, they can try to rationalize it as "they're just compensating for their own homosexuality," thereby putting the responsibility for their distaste on them as opposed to the lgbt community. If someone hates gays because they've had bad experiences with them, hold religious objections, worry accepting gays will just lead to more and more extreme behavior getting accepted later down the line, believe most gays to be sex pests, or something, then that puts the blame (whether rational or not) on the lgbt community. "Those people don't like us because of something we are/something we do" is an uncomfortable spot to be in whether or not the accusations have any reasonable basis, so a lot of them will play the "you're probably closeted" card to turn the origin of the animosity onto the one criticizing the lgbt movement as opposed to the movement itself.
