I'm quite puzzled by her family, because many of her behaviors suggests that she was both spoiled and neglected. Her craving of attention, lack of self care suggest neglect. Also her self-defeating behaviors. Of course her deal with HBO and sense of entitlement suggest spoilage.

Maybe her parents were a bit emotionally negligent but spoiled her with material things and let her do whatever she wanted? That or her attention seeking behaviors are a result of the exact opposite, she grew up with her parents giving her non stop attention so she can't deal with not having all eyes on her.
 
Many neglectful parents spoil the hell out of their kids materially and try to smooth their path as much as possible. They believe that that makes up for not being there and not doing much, not understanding that the goal of parenting isn't just "keep child happy."

And yeah, just google image seach "Carroll Dunham" to see what she grew up with hanging on the walls. But not when you're at work.
 
I don't want to go too much into "poor little Lena" theme, but it's pretty clear to me that she is solidly fucked up, and it is usually mixture of genetics and bad parenting. These artsy-fartsy East Coast liberal Jews are not known to be great parents, and probably are more self-obsessed or obsessed about their "art" than capable of true empathy.

I remember her interaction with her mother in her little documentary was very awkward. I think her mother was embarrassed of her and she tried very hard not to show it.

Bingo. Manhattanites like them view children as token art pieces they *created* and can mold however they wish. Lena's parents more than likely simply told over and over again how special and important she was but never offered healthy emotional validation to counterbalance it. So you're left with someone so far up their own ass they can lick their lungs, while letting the world know how imperfect and broken they are at the same time.

I think Lena's writing is unique in that she's found her voice and I still like the show Girls, but I have a very hard time offering any form of empathy toward someone who willingly tongue-fucks a red-hot poker after heating it up in a fireplace themselves.

Nah, she gets positive media attention from the outlets they watch/read. They probably think they raised “a voice of a generation” for real. One of her parents does pretty gross art (painting) so she’s kind of followed in their foot steps tbh.

Yes, but she is clearly unhealthy/sad looking/whiny brat. They still have to have some sense of aesthetics, propriety etc.? Unless they think that raising something like Lena Dunham is their ultimate middle finger given to the society?

She has a weak chin. The most damning of features. If you're otherwise attractive it will ruin you, and if you're ugly, it will make you toadish and hideous.

And her hair is mousy, colorless, and perennially untidy-looking despite her having hair and makeup crews at her disposal for any public appearance.
