This is a bit late but I want to comment specifically on the idea of work is "choosing which master to serve." My current boss is a friend of mine. I've known him for over a decade. I've been to his house countless times, he's been to mine the same. Our families have shared holidays together. We've traveled the country with each other, sometimes on work, sometimes not. Now sure, he could theoretically fire me tomorrow if he wanted to, but he won't. Because we're good friends, and we work together very well. He is not my "master." This is the case for thousands and thousands of work relationships in this country. Yes, there are plenty of nameless drone bullshit jobs out there (I've had quite a few of them myself), but as I grew older, as I networked more, as I made more connections and actually tried to not just be the lowest of the low, it was easy to discover that there are ample opportunities to grow in my career. And, it was fun to do so! It wasn't the soul-draining exercise I expected based on what these sort of cocksuckers have said. You just have to be somewhat human and you can actually do it.
