La Palma is rumbling - What are the implications of a 40 foot Tsunami along the east coast?

The 21st century has seen just one VEI 5.

The 20th century saw 10 VEI 5s and 3 whopping VEI 6's.

The 19th Century saw 7 VEI 5's, 2 VEI 6's and an incredible VEI 7 - (this singular eruption equates to more than all ALL ERUPTIONS in the last 300 years combined).

So actually, it is rather quiet in perspective.
I hope it's not quiet in the sense of being too quiet like the calm before the storm.

Did ANOTHER vent open somewhere out of sight off to the left? There's steady smoke coming from that direction that I don't remember seeing before. I know we've got new vents at the bottom but this seems like it's coming from a whole different direction than anything I knew about.
Two new mouths and a new river of lava. This link leads to Spanish National TV's front page for all La Palma volcano stories
They've got a couple of webcams running, one on the actual eruption
and the other on the beach

This site has some amazing drone footage:

Oh, this was so helpful getting an idea of what the actual positioning of things is; what a difference an aerial perspective makes in sorting out what we're constantly seeing in the webcam angles.
I thought they were very strict on keeping all drones away, is this one actually sanctioned by the gov't? I see that the name is vaguely official sounding but hell if I know much about it other than that.

My new favorite euro youtuber is Bushcraft Bear. Towards the end he shows a cave dwellings carved into an old lava flow, and talks about who owns the new land.

His English was pretty rough in videos from when the eruption started, but it's come a long way since then.

This guy is how i would imagine a conquistador to look. Slap some metal armor on Him and give him a musket...

I am pretty sure that is the style he wanted. He fits the description

The GOOGLES! They Do Nothing!
But yeah this guy is both fascinating, educational and unintentionally hilarious.

That's exactly what my wife said, and for once I am in total agreement. Lol

La Palma is sure causing trouble. Remember when the experts were telling everyone that nothing would happen? Saying to just rely on the USGS for (incomplete and inaccurate) info?

I am rather glad Mother Nature is giving us something to look at instead of news feeds featuring the stupid shit humans are up to lately.

The US East Coast is woefully unpreparred for even the concept of a tsunami. If the emergency sirens go off they are trained to head for the basement.

A drone video from INVOLCAN (Canary Islands Volcanology Institute) taken this morning at 10.30 local time, after a new vent opened in the fracture zone. Source.

Unsure if relevant but fits the theme of what feels like increasing seismic/geological activity worldwide- 7.2 earthquake off Vanuatu (a) and more relevant - a stay at home/lockdown order for the towns of Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso (a) due to worsening air quality.
My favorite wackadoodle earthquake forecaster is all over this. I'm looking forward to seeing if there's an uptick in volcano activity in the next 10ish days.

A sustained global uptick in volcanic activity right now would be a great crossover with our other happenings - A colder winter from all the emissions would really be the feather in the cap of the energy shortages stemming from the supply chain issues, and we already know from last year that staying indoors spikes covid numbers. A colder winter will make that worse too.

Overdue:

Probably. There should be a VEI7 in the next 90 years. Probably 2.

A VEI 7 of medium to high range in todays global economy would have substantial impacts on virtually every country in the world and it would cripple the global economy within 100% degree of certainty. Recovery would be in the current global economy difficult.

Deaths would be substantial primarily from secondary effects.

As an example Tambora of 1815 was to happen today the impact on the global economy would be startling to watch and the loss of crops (depending on wind conditions) would certainly see some populations going without. If a VEI7 happened in the USA and the wind conditions allowed it to travel to the Mid West the losses of grain would be immense.

VEI8:

A VEI8 even on the low end of the scale is a significant enough event to entirely change the global order whereby some countries would effectively cease to exist and society would break down and the world as we know it would become unrecognizable politically and in every way you can imagine. Life as we know it would entirely cease, a global temporary order more akin to a dictatorship would be swift to take hold. Wars over resources would happen within weeks or months. More than half the global population would perish. Probably more.

Mitigation of VEI8 or high end VE7.:

There have been serious discussions that are not Science Fiction by scientists regarding high level VEI7's and any VEI8 eruption - if they were to be projected to happen what could be done to prevent them. It is actually a very real concern that has raised very unusual solutions which may seem far fetched but are entirely reasonable.

Some of them have included detonation of Hydrogen bombs in the calderas of the these monsters to purposefully set off a premature eruption that would yield a VEI6 or so and prevent a VEI7 (or heaven forbid a VEI8 from happening. There is no made made structure possible to prevent or contain a VEI7 or 8; but premature release of magma from the chambers would in theory buy more time and delay the colossal eruption from happening.

As an example, modeling of detonations in Yellowstone has been loosely done to see the effects of breaching the magma chamber causing a ground eruption of magma.

Impact Event:

An impact event of a large Bolide should cause volcanism at the Antipodal point of the globe. This is believed to have happened several times where the impact event send shockwaves which then concentrate on the point on the other side of the globe. As an example the Dinosaur killer more than likely set off the Deccan Trap eruptions which released more than Yellowstone has ever released in all eruptions combined since eternity.
