Yes, I'm sure Slate is run by CP advocates, Kurt.

Eichenwald's Weird Checkbook Journalism
The Editors' Note, the reporter, and the reporter's testimony.

By Jack Shafer

Journalist Kurt Eichenwald is making news again with his Dec. 19, 2005, New York Times wowser about child pornography on the Internet ("Through His Webcam, a Boy Joins a Sordid Online World"). But this time the news is bad for the reporter and his former paper.

A Times Editors' Note published this week explains that Eichenwald gave a $2,000 check to former child-porn performer Justin Berry, the primary subject of the big story. That's one bad. Reporters aren't supposed to give money to sources. But Eichenwald also didn't tell his editors about the transaction. That's two bads.

Three competing narratives describe the Eichenwald-Berry relationship. The first is a 1,200-word sidebar ("Making a Connection With Justin") Eichenwald wrote to accompany his Dec. 15, 2005, investigation. In it, Eichenwald details, step by step, how an online search of financial fraud cases led him to a posting about Berry and ultimately the child-porn scoop. The sidebar describes the two hats the reporter wore as he reported the child-pornography story and rescued Berry from the trade. It doesn't mention the check.

The second narrative is the Times Editors' Note. It states that the $2,000 check from Eichenwald to Berry "emerged" as part of proceedings in a trial of a Michigan man accused of criminal sexual conduct involving minors. (Eichenwald, who now works for Portfolio magazine, has been called to testify in these proceedings; Berry is not a defendant.) Emerged is strangely passive language for Times editors to use. It suggests that the natural forces of erosion released the check from a bank vault and the wind blew it to New York, where it fluttered down onto a desk at W. 43rd St.

It goes on and on from there.

The only person pimping the "Kurt Eichenwald is a superhero" narrative is Eichenwald himself.

In even the most favorable other coverage, the very best that can be said of it is that the man is seriously ethically challenged and violated basic principles of ethical journalism.

I think he may be on the cusp of breaking. Who knows, maybe six months from now, he will be as broken as Shia Labeouf.

Come down off the cross Eichenwald. That thing's for Jesus, not you.

They put plenty of actual criminals on crosses. I'd rather he hang up on that cross so we can all see him squirm.

We hear this "I saved x many number of children" from so many pedophiles. It's their defense to tell us it's okay what they do. He's not the authorities. When it comes to this his only job is to report and walk away, but course he's too stupid to do that and loves children too much.

Thing is, "I saved kids" doesn't work unless you are literally working right next to a detective or some other law enforcement. And the way this story is coming down, I'm fairly certain he wasn't. Who's to say he doesn't have an extra hard drive or flash drive with all that CP on it?

Hell, the fact that he's taking this line of defense is adding fuel to the fire. All he had to say was "you're talking bullshit, kid." and drop it. But he didn't. He's gone on 20 tweet long rants about how he's the hero and being unfairly victimized-Kurt, you're painting yourself into a corner. Try to stop that.

Kurt is one cow who is not only very easy to milk, he'll even milk himself some more in the process.

It's both hilarious and very, very pathetic.

This guy gives me the creeps.

From the article: "So he typed in Interpol, fraud alert, and investigations. That led him to a Website called MexicoFriends.com, which sounded to Eichenwald like it might involve cross-border money laundering but turned out to be an amateurish porn operation starring Justin Berry"

Like, maybe that kinda excuse would pass 12 years ago, but you don't just google interpol and get shown mexican kiddie porn by google. Can't wait for more - picking a fight with WL was clearly a smart idea.

That story says he found a fan site of Berry's and that's how he found him.... the fuck

Note, Wikipedia is Wikipedia and Eichenwald is notoriously litigious. Wikipedia has BLP on all this shit. It is all from reliable sources and all says what they say, and those who defend Eichenwald have had every opportunity to edit war over every single bit of this shit to death.

This nigga is having a full blown meltdown.

Video Re-Enactment of The Internet and Wikileaks interviewing Eichenwald over his job as a "Journalist."

This guy really buys into his own self-promoted image as the crusading hero journalist, doesn't he? He thinks he's Clark Kent without the cape under his clothes.

Or maybe he's got one, maybe I shouldn't assume.

The problem is first that journalism has at least a vestigial code of ethics and actually paying sources for news is the cardinal violation of that. The other is that CP investigation doesn't have an "investigative journalist" or a "vigilante" exception to it. Even if his motivations were pure, once he was funding criminal activities, he was outside the realm of ethics and legality.

It's good if people got caught as a result of it, but people have ended up in prison for doing less.

The moment he had knowledge of this, he was not some kind of self-appointed undercover cop. He was a journalist paying a source for a news story that he, himself, hoped to be paid for. The moment he went ahead and paid multiple times, he was digging himself a deeper and deeper hole.

Then, when he chose to lie not once about this, but multiple times, first admitting the first payment, while lying about the other money, then finally coming up with the lame seizure excuse, he kept lying himself into a deeper and deeper hole still.

His ethical choice would have been immediately to turn it over to law enforcement once it was clear he was in over his head. He's not Batman. You don't get to appoint yourself an undercover cop in child abuse cases. Even the Perverted Justice spergs had rules about that to avoid ending up in the worst of these situations.

To this day, this sociopath is incapable of admitting he seriously ethically fucked up.

So, just to summarize, in the span of a few days:

-A libel lawsuit against his employer was settled over something he wrote about a Sputnik writer.
-Undeterred, he tweeted out more libel, this time against Julian Assange.
-He got exposed as an admin on a CP site.
-He got exposed using sockpuppets to post positive reviews of his own books.
-He probably got fired for being a libelist.
-He has constantly continued to make the situation worse by having a public meltdown on twitter where he's admitted to the main elements of every accusation against him but employed ridiculous, highly questionable excuses.

Did I miss anything else that happened recently? This guy is such a colossal fuckup that it's hard to keep track of even the major humiliating and ridiculous bullet points.
