Japanese Idol culture brought us gems like Perfect Blue and Idolm@ster
K-pop idols brought us autistic fans that would go full 1488 if darkies talked shit about them.

Did you know they made a K-drama based on Idolmaster?

Most people probably don't know about Honey Popcorn, the team of former Japanese AKB48 idols who became porn actresses later. They decided to fund their own Kpop group. called Honey Popcorn. Since porn in South Korea is illegal, a sizable amount of people petitioned the government to censor their TV appearances. Despite that, they released their first single and had a debut showcase which is the norm. But their fanmeets are 19 and above only, since I assume porn fans will attend.

The interesting thing is, they apparently haven't given up on their porn careers in Japan. I have no idea WTF they are thinking.

During the Wednesday showcase, Mikami, who is considered the leader of the band, spoke to the crowd about the band's past profession. "I am engaged in such (adult video) work in Japan," she said. "I also consider that serious, but right now I want to focus on promoting Honey Popcorn."

You know, with the relationship between Japan and Korea, do you think part of the controversy is because they're Japanese actors performing K-Pop? Or is that a non-issue?

Kpop Companies usually add girls to their groups from China, Japan, Taiwan, because it allows the group to widen their consumerbase. It's far more rare for Thailand, Phillipines or Vietnam to be recruited, they usually have to have a wealthy prominent family behind them.

Most groups these days have at least one Chinese and/or Japanese member.

Honestly, Japanese idol music fucking sucks, or is just very very bland, because like everything else in Japan it's made for Japanese tastes, and japanese taste alone because they have a big enough market. A common milestone for any Korean group is to start making japanese language releases and promoting there because it opens up a potential fanbase of millions, and you go from playing concerts for 5,000 to 50,000.

There are a few notable exceptions but the music is usually stripped of any edge or experimental qualities and made really bland or cutesy, because that's what they want there. Girls Generation is the only group I can think of where their Japanese albums are actually basically superior in quality. There are K-Jpop releases I like from a number of acts but it's often an acquired taste. The homegrown stuff sucks and is just another thing to highlight that Japan is a literally dying country that hasn't been on the cutting edge of anything since the early 2000s, just stagnating and coasting on their achievements of the past millennia as they drift further into irrelevancy, steadily being eclipsed in soft power by the country backwaters they used to bully and torture for decades.

Doesn't make their adaptation on idolmaster any less shit.

I think thats why the producer of AKB48 decided to collaborate with South Koreas K-Pop industry. I think perhaps he realizes Idol Jpop has been stagnating while Kpop has been able to get worldwide reach. As one of the Japanese idols said, no one knows who we are outside of Japan. So the Produce 48 compeititon reality show was created to make a joint Japanese Idol/Korean Trainee group.

However when the collaborative group was handed over to Japanese producers, they came out with the same Japanese idol music thats been produced for the last 20 years. Which just made them look like an arm of AKB48.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but there's a guy on youtube who's currently pretending to be a fake K-pop idol named Ian Lee, and he already has over 40 thousand followers on Instagram, and a fuckton of fanart and fanfiction based on him.

Also, his stans call themselves "Leesbians" which is honestly the best thing I've ever heard.

I’m amazed that these people can’t tell that the pink guy album is obviously a comedy album. But then again, the kpop fandom is one of the most overly sensitive fandoms out there so I really shouldn’t be surprised by now... (:_(

As bad a k-pop stans, is there anyone on this thread who does like k-pop?
No hatred just curious.
I personally like kpop, but the fandom is beyond cringe and the expectations placed on idols is weird to say the least. The music itself is not too bad if you don’t mind pop music that’s in a language you don’t speak. Like with all genres of music, you can find some good songs if you look.

is there specific formula that k-pop producers shoot for (% girl appearance, catchy tune something else)? I don't get k-pop but then I'm not sure that I get the grouppie culture in the West either. K-pop seem like the focus is on girls in cutesey outfits. At least in Euro scene, with girl/boy bands, videos seem to be the focus, not live stage performances, it's more sexualized, less clothing, less choreographed group performances, also seems like greater variety in girl bodytype/facial features. Is k-pop more of an Asian thing than just regular boy/girl bands? If I had to replace girls in the video with Europeans and have them sing in English, I don't think I'd mistake that, at least I am not aware of Western k-pop mirror.

I've been browsing twitter more and more often since #Jojiisoverparty has been trending. I'm just glad to see all the responses about others calling out the kpop stans for not realizing Frank = Joji.

People discovering that Joji was Filthy Frank the whole time is the equivalent of normies discovering 4chan for the first time and getting buttmad at the anons posting there every day.

I'd compare the whole senario as people discovering Tropic Thunder for the first time and think they need to cancel Robert Downey Jr. for blackfacing.

They all miss the joke.
