You should never trust Communists to stick to any agreements. This won't end until North Korea's government collapses under the weight of its own incompetence.

North Korea is a failed model and is only relevant/around because China needs a lightning rod to divert attention away from their own power building.

Goddamn, he's fat.
It is intentional.

His pops was loved/honored/worshiped, but was a diminutive man who lived mostly out of the spotlight. Jong-un decided to style himself after his peepaw, Il-sung. You know, the guy who singlehandedly ran the Japs out of Korea. The resemblance between the two is very strong (though all chinamen look alike...) The idealized Il-sung (like official portrait below) is what Jong-un is going after. He gained weight to do it.

If this puts an end to the autistic nuclear dickwaving and North Korea raises the standard of living so their citizens aren't in perpetual starvation mode, that would be wonderful, but I'm not going to be optimistic for awhile until I see actual change.

Basically this. I'm skeptical it will have any material impact on the lives of ordinary North Koreans, but it's definitely a start and good news, for sure.

EDIT: Anybody seriously considering a "unified" Korea any time soon is jumping the gun, unless the North Korean government completely collapses, which I suspect will take quite some time. But a step forward is a step forward, regardless.

Now we wait and see how China reacts. They don’t want a us military base on their border and a unified Korea opens that possibility.

Oh man, looking forward to 1990 style songs about how the world is gonna live in harmony now, a la Scorpions with Wind of Change or Jesus Jones doing Right Here, Right Now.

In a Panglossian "everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds" interpretation, this explains the Trump presidency perfectly.

Don't get me wrong, this is amazing news, but we shouldn't be to comfy with them yet (if at all). They've, in past, have "agreed" to no more nuclear weapons testing and have broke those agreements many times. This certainly is a big step in the right direction no doubt, but to act like they're good boys all the sudden is honestly foolish and we should still be VERY wary of them and keep tabs on their actions closely

Thats nice they're holding hands and all. Now can someone please do something about the constant violations of human rights in North Korea incl. Public executions, concentration camps, prisoners with sentences spanning generations, and the list goes on?

Just saying, pls dont send operatives to get me, Kim

I'm cautiously optimistic about this peace treaty, but I am also wary that Kim Jong-un will do something to fuck it all up. But then again, North Korea's freeze on nuclear development did come out of nowhere and was entirely Kim's idea so who knows?

If this leads to an official peace treaty and a detente between the two countries, then that would be awesome. I don't think reunification would happen unless North Korea's regime collapses completely and that would be a massive headache for both South Korea and China.

Ending the war is a step in the right direction, but this also is very much a political move to put pressure on the US. With the war over, there is potential for Trump deciding to relax sanctions which is a horrible idea.

And Reunification probably isn't going to happen for another decade or two.

So the two Koreas unify - what happens to all the brainwashed, illiterate peasants who are suddenly told that the people they've been told to despise for decades are now their friends?

The peasants are much more aware that their government is lying to them than the pseudo-middle class who are entirely dependent on the Juche party being in power for their relative prosperity. In any case, it'll crash the South Korean economy, probably cause a refugee crisis in Manchuria, international aid will have to be poured into the country and it'll still be a few decades before the region formerly known as North Korea is even remotely as developed as the land further south.
