I must say that a cheap but proper strop and some way too expensive diamond compound have really let me unlock the next level of sharpness.

I have been using shitty strops and compounds for decades but a wood backed, flat, fresh strop with proper diamond really made a differance with stainless steels.

I would also recommend the cheapest ceramic honing rod you can get. It just works. If it doesn't clean it with a rust eraser or whatever aggressive acid you have.

Messermeister makes a very reasonably priced 12" ceramic rod that's pretty great.
