The patreon/fan-support thing is kind of like a cash-only business. There's plenty of valid, good businesses that operate that way for one reason or another. It's also a major avenue for all kinds of illegal activity. It's not inherently bad but it's something scummy people can abuse. I.E. "zombie" patreons where someone is raking in $X/month and producing nothing at all. It's a valid question that can't apply to Godwinson's situation. It's a one-off appearance. If it was a scam for cash it's a shitty one because there was no guarantee of further income. He probably could make that back via fan donos if money was the goal.

"Are they grifting?" The quality of KC has undeniably declined and some negative things have come to light. I won't say whether they are/aren't grifting but it is a situation where I can at least understand where someone would argue either side. This doesn't really apply to Godwinson for the reasons I've specified. It's a reaching, facile argument that works against their intent to come across as not grifting with the lowest of the low effort content.

Yea with KC it definitely seems like they're in it for the money, but I don't feel like the presence of money caused that like Godwinson is saying, rather it's because of Warski and PPP. Godwinson's belief seems to be that money in art corrupts people and ruins the art, which I think is a really dumb take. Some people end up grifting, but those people would have stopped making videos or their show if there was no money involved, so the presence of money hasn't ruined anything, it just means that instead of ending the show they pivoted to grifting.

He holds to the most extreme version of the opinion and then carries it as far as it can go, because that's the most attention-grabbing and thought-provoking thing to do. It's reasonable to accept that he's right at least to some degree in all cases but then weigh exactly how poisonous the influence of money is on a case-by-case basis. It's a matter of degrees.
