Life after tragedy: Shooting survivor Jody Burns' life forever altered

Reporter note: Often times the last article I cover about a tragedy is the court sentencing of an offender or the unfortunate incident itself.
But the victims in these cases have no choice to move on once the "final" story about the event is written. Some have an easier time than others. Some turn into success stories, acting as examples for those who have experienced similar loss and heartache.
I'm hoping to catch up with victims of some of the area's tragedies to see how they are doing and where they are now. Here's the second installment of a monthly column detailing the journeys these victims and their families have taken.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI -- Jody Burns doesn’t dream anymore.
In fact, there’s a lot the 36-year-old survivor doesn’t do any more after nearly being shot to death by her then-boyfriend nearly three years ago.
“I don’t dream at all. I haven’t since I’ve been shot,” said the stern-faced Burns, reliving her Aug. 12, 2010, life-altering nightmare. “Everything has been affected. It’s all different than it used to be.”
Burns was shot twice by her then-boyfriend -- a moment that literally changed every single aspect of her life with two swift clicks of a trigger.
One of the bullets remains lodged in her brain.
“I couldn’t drive anymore. I couldn’t drive for six months. I had to take driver's training again. I had someone stay with me for six months. I couldn’t be left alone,” she said.
“When I lost my job, I couldn’t afford rent. I got evicted. I stayed at my dad’s, I stayed at a shelter, at my sister’s for a week. I mean, he destroyed everything I had.”
To this day, Burns has no sense of taste, no sense of smell. She has just 40 percent hearing in one ear. She has anger issues that resulted from the brain injury. She's lost her job and full custody of her two children as a result.
“I was irritable before, but now I go from mad to wanting to rip someone’s head off. I don’t want to be that way. But the front left lobe of my brain was (struck by the bullet). That’s the part of the brain the effects emotion,” she said.
Night that changed everything
Burns was 33 at the time with her young son at her home at 11380 Hall Road on that Aug. 12, 2010, evening when she was shot twice with a .22-caliber rifle – once in the face and once in the forehead – by her live-in boyfriend Ysmael “Mel” Deleon III.

The shootings occurred when Burns was on the phone with a 911 operator trying to report Deleon’s erratic behavior that night inside her home as her 5-year-old son stood nearby.
The boy was credited as a "hero" by local law enforcement, after he grabbed a towel and held it to his mother's head after the first shot. All his soothing words to his mother were captured on a 911 recording that Burns has decided not to hear.
She's been told and retold the story of his bravery though many times since she was released from the hospital.
Events of the night she was shot are blurry. But Burns remembers how it started -- just not how it ended.
It started with an argument after Deleon had been drinking all day at a family function. Then she recalls him storming into her home, full of rage, as he approached her. He was mad that she missed his phone call, she said.
“I was scared. I knew something was going to happen. I called 911. He came in. He shot me in the face. My son heard the gunshot and he got a towel and was helping me," Burns said.
"I called 911 back. I said, ‘He shot me in the face, you need to come and help me.' (Deleon) tried to leave, but couldn’t find his keys. He was mad because I called the cops. Then, while my kid’s hands were right here,” she said, pointing to her face, “he walked in and shot me again.”
Burns said, showing some emotion: “’My son told him, ‘How can you do that to your babe? You told her you loved her!’”
Deleon fled out the front door and her son “dead-bolted the front door and waited for the cops,” Burn said.
“When police came, he unlocked the door and let them in. I was sitting up, bleeding in two spots, sitting there waiting for them. The cops came in and took my son right away and shut the door.”
Deputies found Deleon’s rifle near a barn and arrested him a short time later near Bossett and White roads.
No one else was in the home besides the boy, his gravely wounded mother and her shooter. Burns’ 12-year-old daughter was elsewhere that night.
Deleon was later sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison in 2010.
He pleaded no contest to assault with intent to murder, possessing a firearm while committing a felony and two counts of resisting and obstructing police.
Visiting 14th Circuit Judge Quinn E. Benson committed to cap Deleon’s minimum prison sentence at 19 1/2 years — 17 1/2 years for the attempted murder, a consecutive two years for the gun count. The maximum sentence on the attempted murder was 30 years.
The rest is history, she said.
“He destroyed everything I had,” she says of Deleon.
Moving forward
It’s been a long time since anyone has heard anything from Burns. Since the shooting, that’s just the way she prefers it.
Living alone now in a mobile home, Burns said it’s lonely, but better than anyone else having to deal with her anger issues that have crept up since the shooting.
“I just want to be left alone,” she said.
She lost her full-time job and then lost her home to foreclosure. She’s had to totally re-learn to function again as a normal human being.
“I just need to get by every day,” she said.
As far as having a relationship again, Burns said she’d rather not go down that road.
“Nope, the only guy I need is my kid and that’s it,” she said.
She shares custody of her son. She signed over full custody to the boy’s father after the shooting. They live on the same road as Burns and the arrangement works well, Burns said.
She remains close to her son, who she didn't want to identify.
“His dad takes good care of him. I’m very proud of him for stepping up to the plate,” she said of her son’s father.
But living alone and "isolating" the outside world takes its toll, she admits.
“I miss having someone there to be with me -- someone to cook for, to play games with,” she said, sitting next to her mother, Cindy Ransom.

Sorry, just updated my post. Pretty sure the jody burns in the article I saw is a different person. She doesn't look like the woman in the court room photos at all. The woman in the guitar video looks like she's had a ton of plastic surgery though, so maybe it could still be her?

Can any of us recall the extent of his battle scars?
Slapping himself in the face? Being beat up by NAL with a Puff plushie? Getting into some scuffle at a bar or gas station liquor store? Head trauma from syncopal episode due to drunkenly hitting the ground? Lacerations from bad lathing? Burnt fingertips from torching and frying some dankness?
I'm curious how Cobra would endure any GSW's to the limbs, torso, let alone the face, twice.
Then again, the boy may have a high ceiling for agony as his receptors have been dulled and fried to perceive any noticeable pain stimuli.
Anyways, props to this Michigan chick; not easy on the eyes but seems like good people. Kudos to overcoming any suffering and trauma, physical and psychological, from a .22 caliber x 2.

I don't want to post too off topic but a video of the guitar woman showed up on Instagram or something a year or 2 ago and I've been wondering wtf is up with that ever since. I couldn't get any answers at the time, she's been active on YouTube since a few years after the date on the article (across a couple accounts but this is the oldest). The footage is really low quality but it looked like she already had a bunch of plastic surgery. I don't think it's the same person but the dates kind of line up I guess.
