Interactions with normal people have always had a rejuvinative effect on Cobes. Even Mr. Green, who by all standards would qualify as a trole, had our boy elated and enjoying the company.

My guess would be that Kate told him about Jessica breaking the wand which is why he calls it petty. I don't know why Kate is going out of "her" way to tell Josh not to talk about it, he's going to seethe about it eventually. He can't help but shoot himself in the foot.
