I loved Blink 1488. The Saddam's Song music video still makes me laugh.
 
There are lot of trad Christian larpers these days who talk a lot about "Christ being King" and to "go with God," and who keep yapping on about the glory of their God-fearing ancestors and shit, but Kanye really does embody that sort of classical faith in God - that sort of unyielding confidence in a higher power - that was common in Christians centuries ago but is really only scene in a handful of zealots today. The type of faith that makes you go: "Yeah, I'll get on this boat, sail across the vast ocean to a foreign land, torch my ships behind me, and fight an army 100x the size of my own and still win because Jesus is on my side, so I literally can't lose."

From a neutral perspective, I feel like it was easier before because you didnt have access to one million human voices telling you all kinds of shit all the time, meaning your faith would more likely match your local community's faith and sustain itself that way, and the schizophrenics of today who are like that wouldve been revered as shamans/etc.
