onore decado! This thread, too, is also Decade's fault!
Shame, I was not especially enjoying Saber so left it for a while, I'll still finish it up.Just finished Kamen Rider Saber. The show was pretty bland in total and most of the characters aren't very memorable. The final villain has spent the last few millennia in a seethe because free will is a lie and he hates living in the simulation, so destroy the world.
I'm getting tired of seeing Kamen Rider are multiple power-ups/costume changes that are overcome approximately 2-3 episodes later (yes, I know 'Toys for the Toys God'. The shit is still annoying).
The problem was that Toei decided to combine the gimmick of having mix and match forms like W and OOO with the gimmick of having multiple riders at once. The first episode of the series to not feature a new Rider or form/collectible in any way was Episode 12, literally a quarter of the way into the series. As much as I really didn't like Kamen Rider Ryuki, I think that show did a better job at balancing out the ten Riders featured, as they chose to focus mainly on four of them while gradually introducing other Riders and killing them off to highlight how brutal the Rider War was. The problem with Saber is that with thirteen Riders, some are naturally going to be left in the dust in terms of focus or character, and the few character arcs to get more focus are dragged out beyond belief. Saber was essentially a victim of a show with really interesting concepts that got muddled by too many characters to properly focus on any of them.Just finished Kamen Rider Saber. 3-4 is the sweet spot for the maximum number of Riders a series can handle before Riders start getting lost in the background. More than that and the writers have to either kill off or neutralize a few of them (Ryuki, Kabuto, Gaim). The problem was that Toei decided to combine the gimmick of having mix and match forms like W and OOO with the gimmick of having multiple riders at once. Hopefully Revice will become a return to form for the franchise with only two Riders to start off with as opposed to half a dozen like the last two seasons.
Kamen Rider Revice and the controversy

I wanted to wait until the press conference reveal of Revice to talk about it, but there is a very important, very distressing subject to discuss.
If you didn't know, the premise of the show involves a duo; Kamen Rider Revi, played by the protagonist's actor, and Kamen Rider Vice, voiced by voice actor Subaru Kimura who previously voiced the Seiza Blaster from Kyuranger.
The reason this person's name is of particular importance is because of the controversy he garnered arooound 2018-ish? I don't know the exact context, it appeared to be some kind of photoshoot of him in various outfits with wigs to match (ie crossdressing in one, different wig + glasses in another), one of which goes too far and includes him doing blackface.
https://twitter.com/meowmitake/status/1006774759881928704
Separately from this is some photo on Instagram where he was eating a pizza and held it in such a way to mimic the look of an African lip plate. The story I've heard about the photoshoot is that he WAS asked why he did blackface, and proceeded to take it down without explanation. So no statement has been made about all this as far as I'm aware.
Excuse the bold text as I use it for emphasis.
Now, let me just say here, what he did was beyond wrong and ignorant. It feels like, when you look at it within the context of what that photoshoot was about, it was essentially cosplay, but blackface has extreme connotations and the other photo seems to suggest further ignorance. There's no denying that he has things to answer to. I don't know if it's just rumor or not, but supposedly he has recently been blocking people who confront him about the photo. If so, could be because there are so many taking it with (justified) aggression. It's possible, in his mind, he was just making jokes and people attacked him for it. At least based on how these two photos look, he didn't seem malicious. But even then, not good.
For the people wondering "Why would Toei hire him," there's more ways to think of it than simply assuming Toei's stance on race. Apart from aforementioned notion that these were jokes, there's also the possibility they just don't KNOW about it because it's an issue that's probably non-existent in Japan outside of foreigners who know better. Also worth noting, Japan has its own sorted history with race, and not much in the way of hate speech laws as far as I'm aware. Whether they will address it is undetermined, but as we get more of a western presence, I hope it does. Some fans are wanting a recast, and it'd probably be the easiest recast if he's truly a voice-only role. We're just kinda assuming it since he is known for voice work.
Something that I'd like to make clear now: Please, please do not assume that anyone who even remotely likes any aspect of Kamen Rider Revice is a racist. Please do not assume anyone who buys merchandise from it is in direct support of Subaru Kimura. Please do not assume anyone who even LIKES the character he voices actually knows and likes what he did. There are for sure gonna be people who aren't even participating in fandom due to drama, who will be watching the show fully unaware of any of this, and I suspect they too will be unfairly labeled as racists. That just seems to be how a section of fandom is dealing with this. It's an all-or-nothing approach that gets us nowhere.
I didn't want to have to discuss it here, but I feel like I must. Like when Toei did a cease & desist on fansubs, people LEGITIMATELY have been sending threats to Kotetsu Toys, accusing him of being racist if he chooses to sell Revice toys. The man is offering a great personalized service to us fans outside of Japan, and when Covid hit, it threatened to take his one-man business down. The fact he's able to carry on is both astounding and admirable. Taka has done nothing but good and is receiving death threats from fans over here because he's just trying to make an honest living. It's incredibly disheartening.
The subject reminds me of the one I always struggle with, whether one can separate the artist from the art - I usually keep that one to myself since it feels like a personal matter. I've found that the truth is... separating the artist from the art is case-sensitive. For example, Harry Potter is something I simply do not want to engage with anymore, despite how much it meant to me, because JK Rowling has become a problematic person for her transphobia. While blackface is just as big of an issue as transphobia, one voice actor - even a prominent one - is not equal to the person who created it all. That's at least where I've determined my tolerance is. Everyone's tolerance is different.
It should also be said for my own context, I have trouble remembering the names of most actors/voice actors THAT I ACTUALLY LIKE, and by virtue of using the internet I can take the moment to look up the name if I have to. I've in fact copied and pasted the name Subaru Kimura every single time in this same post. So the actors, even if I like their performances, aren't people I focus on. It's the writing that I focus on.
I say all this to say that I would like to engage with Kamen Rider Revice. I've been excited for it, and none of it has been related to casting. As far as I'm concerned, trying to associate the show itself with racism, while well-meaning, doesn't make sense, and attacking people for liking the show makes even less sense. If this were a situation where cast members were photographed doing something offensive on the set, or the head writer has been vocal about an unsavory topic, then I can see the logic of "If you support the show," but in this case it's a super loose association. In all honesty, even with top billing, a voice actor does not have that much sway in the show and especially the toyline. Now, if you're talking about the photobooks that Subaru Kimura puts out, which are entirely about him, then you've got a good argument there. Buying a Kamen Rider Vice because you like the character that the writer came up with, that's different.
That being said, I'm talking about this within the context of people judging others. The people who legitimately say "If you watch this show then you agree with the man's racism". if you want to show your disapproval by not watching the show or buying the merchandise, that's completely valid to do. With a toy-centric series, the way to speak out is with your money. Just, again, PLEASE, do not also try to force that stance onto others. Their enjoyment is not an endorsement of racism.
What matters is to acknowledge what Subaru Kimura did was wrong and should be addressed. If I end up liking his character, for example, know that it's for a number of factors (ie: the writing) that don't relate to the voice actor as a person, and is in fact DESPITE the voice actor as a person. And if Kimura doesn't speak up by the end of Revice, that too will leave a weird feeling about the character in retrospect. I'm always gonna feel weird liking the character because of him. More importantly, I want Kimura to acknowledge the photos and, at the barest minimum, apologize for his ignorance.
If you believe that me watching this show, buying these toys, makes me a racist, then you know nothing about me as a person. The SO-DO Pop podcast has been promoting the Black Lives Matter movement, resources to stop anti-Asian hate, and the Trevor Project, all decisions that were made by the whole team. I'd like to think there are people following me who know better than to be the toxic types that harass like this, so hopefully I'll be okay. Like I always say, you're watching these shows with important moral values, so please take those values to heart and strive to be better.
If you'd like to do something that helps,

There are better ways to support this cause.
With that being said, the press conference is soon, and I'm interested to see what this year brings.

I get the sense that the series is setting up for Ikki's brother and sister (Daiji and Sakura) to get belts in the future and create a Rider Trio (reminiscent of Ichigo, Nigo, and V3) because 50th anniversary series. The third Revice episode was okay, but it's been two episodes in a row that consist of mostly action scenes. The action scenes aren't particularly good either but they aren't bad, they're serviceable. Okay choreography, not that much CGI unless they're using finishers. More importantly Vice didn't make as many bad jokes and that's the best thing about the episode. All in all it's inoffensive, maybe if I was drunk I'd get more enjoyment out of it. There's just nothing about the characters that makes me interested in them because we don't get to see almost anything of them due to all the padding/fighting.
So it's a 6/10 episode for a 6/10 show, a very generous 6/10 at that (with 5 being "tolerable but why would you subject yourself to this garbage if there are any alternatives"). Maybe two or three more episodes and if it stays like this then I'm back to catching up on Garo.
