The Aga Khan is head of one of the world's larger Islamic sects, the Nizaris* (who are Ismaili seveners) and the last living declared Imam of any Shi'ite Sect. The position is hereditary and centuries old (in case anyone thought it was a cult.) While his millions of followers don't amount to much in the face of Sunni dominance, and I doubt anyone on KF cares about the historical/religious distinctions between Muslims, his significance in light of this investigation seemed noteworthy.

*they were the legendary assassins of Alamut, and the origins of the word "assassin." This guys ancestors are who they were sworn to protect.

Their fortress got conquered by the Mongols when their assassination shtick failed to scare off the horde. They killed the Mongol leaders but the Mongols didn't care and invaded anyway. Some realized this and fled with the line of the current Aga Khan. They split further as a sect in Egypt, and also some went to India. The ones in India eventually got conquered by the British, and being wealthy and generally liberal from that point onward, migrated to Canada, where most of them now live. It's quite a tale.

Of course they stopped being murderers a long time ago, and are among the most liberal of Muslims. They're always on about feminism, social justice, etc. They're also rich af. Most are diplomats, bankers, and engineers, and so forth.

I just checked the Wiki article on Aga Khan, and apparently:

Among the goals the Aga Khan has said he works toward are the elimination of global poverty; the promotion and implementation of secular pluralism; the advancement of the status of women; and the honoring of Islamic art and architecture.

From the page on the Nizari, the Islamic sect Aga Khan is head of:

Nizari teachings emphasize human reasoning (Ijtihad, the individual use of one's reason when using both the Quran and Hadith as resources), pluralism (the acceptance of racial, ethnic, cultural and intra-religious differences) and social justice.

Ismailis often referred to as the Muslim diplomatic and business elite. They started out as traders but now work in banking and real estate and are steadily permeating the law, engineering and medical professions.

This is actually really impressive. I mean, they're Muslims who are all for women's rights, secularism, and pluralism. These are the people we should be supporting, not terrorism-spreading fucks like the Saudis.

Indeed. A very interesting, if very obscure bunch. I am glad you took the time to look into it. In the context of a scandal the Aga Khan is not so insignificant as he may at first seem, and the Nizaris have an important place in the history of Islam, being remarkably successful at integration into the west. I'll be keen to see what comes of the Aga Khan's relationship with Trudeau.

We just wanted him to legalize weed

Tbh the only real choices we had for the election were Harper and Trudeau and lots of folks were pissed at Harper so they said "fuck it, give the new guy a shot"
Personally I could give two shits about Canadian politics but holy shit this dude takes a lot of vacations.

Sad thing is that I could see a far-right populist movement forming in Canada should Trudeau decide to run for PM again. He really shot himself in the foot with his glowing praise for Fidel Castro, to the point where some hardcore pro-Trudeau Canadian friends admitted they couldn't defend him after a mutual friend went on a rant against the guy, as they knew people directly affected by Castro's regime in Cuba.

But given Canada just got over 8 years of Stephen Harper, I doubt they'll be quick to turn on Trudeau and the Canadian Left so soon, unless he does another colossally stupid thing in the eyes of both the locals and the global stage.

He'll be lucky to get in for a second term lol

I must be jaded, none of this sounds particularly damming, happens all the time in the US. Lobbyists having senators to island getaways, leaving office and getting cushy jobs in business that they lobbying with. Canada is so naive to governmental abuses it's adorable to watch this unfold

It still sounds cult-like, akin to Messianic Judaism. I could be wrong and in that case, good for them. If I'm right, it won't surprise me when this investigation finds out Trudeau visited the island for a room full of young boys to fuck.

It's been around for well over a thousand years and exists in many countries. This doesn't make it not a cult in and of itself, but it's worth noting that it has had centuries of vetting by communities it exists in, including peaceful settlement in the west, and again, millions of followers. Comparing a full-fledged separate religion with a millenia of theology and formation to Messianic Judaism in its modern form seems unfair to me. The Aga Khan is like, the 49th of his line.
