This is like the fourth example I've seen of Julie/Mike not knowing how to act like grown adults in public. It begs the question why no one called the police when they saw Mike choke Julie -- physical assault.
Possibly, it never actually happened. I suspect that her and the truth are only casual acquaintances. If it is true, most likely Mike choked her between bouts of sticking their tongues down each other's throats and she showed pleasure instead of distress, so it's possible everyone else there just edged away from the freaks and pretended that nothing was happening. Or else were enjoying the show.
Mike seems to lose total control of himself and goes way beyond that "OK" limit by biting and suckerpunching her. He also has really fucked up anger issues. So there's always that to consider, at any point he could go berserk and kill Julie..
It's definitely a possibility. Hybrisophilia is a dangerous kink to have.

I don't know if this is always how it goes, but none of those people I knew had much by way of respect for appropriate behaviour, but at least they were much more subtle about it. Julie doesn't strike me as overly familiar with the truth, so it wouldn't surprise me if the incident never happened, or else happened differently to what she's writing. If it is true, I suspect that the choking incident came inbetween bouts of groping or shoving their hands in each other's crotches. BDSM has a massive exhibitionist/voyeuristic component. The people around them edging awkwardly away (or else trying to hide their interest) would have been a huge part of the fun of it all.
