besides, he knows he has more value as an independant than someone tied down to any institution. and when his spiel goes even further off the rails into "this could potentially be harmful" territory he could start throwing up disclaimers.

He offers nothing more than intelligent sounding self help stuff. There's no functional difference between 12 Rules for Life and any other self help book besides the wordage of the rules. I can pick up any self help book off a grocery store shelf and get the same basic concepts in about 200 fewer pages.

Read these rules and tell me how many of them you've never heard before.
  1. "Stand up straight with your shoulders back."
  2. "Treat yourself like you are someone you are responsible for helping."
  3. "Make friends with people who want the best for you."
  4. "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today."
  5. "Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them."
  6. "Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world."
  7. "Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)."
  8. "Tell the truth — or, at least, don’t lie."
  9. "Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t."
  10. "Be precise in your speech."
  11. "Do not bother children when they are skate-boarding."
  12. "Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street."

None of these are new ideas or concepts and some of them are actually stupid, like 6, 8, 11, and 12.

It is special to people who haven't read any philosophy and have been raised purely on pop culture and video games. As goofy as he can be, peterson is a force for good in the world overall and doesn't deserve his lolcow status. Not over people like Sargon, Razorfist, Hasan and the jew from h3h3, that's for damn sure.
