Republican Sen. John McCain, an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero who served for 30 years in the Senate representing Arizona, died Saturday due to complications stemming from brain cancer.

His office said in a statement that his wife Cindy McCain and their family were alongside him when he died.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," his office said.

McCain, 81, was a part of many of the past three decades' most significant political moments. He was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee in a contest he lost to President Barack Obama. He also sought the presidency in 2000, mounting a primary campaign against President George W. Bush.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, the Arizona Republican followed both his father and grandfather, who were four-star admirals, into the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions.

It just says a lot about his character that he stayed in office when he knew how sickly he was. It was really quick that just a couple of days after ending treatment he just gives up the ghost, but still, he valued his political position over quietly getting out of the spotlight for treatment and spending the rest of his days with his family whom I feel the more sympathy for than the man himself tbh.

It sucks and all that we're literally watching his generation pass away, but at the very least, since Jeff Flake's not running to take his place, his legacy died with him. Local news is going to blow up with this for the next week, so I'm still going to see his face plastered everywhere.

I just wonder how proud his father is of him and if the two are catching up on old times before John goes to confront the men he left behind in Vietnam.

If I believed in hell, I'm sure that he'd be burning there for selling out our boys when he was captured.
 
Having McCain also in the afterlife does give Robbie Rotten someone to compete against.

...nah, what am I saying? Robbie is still Villain Number One even in death.

That Stefan Karl Steffanson, Robbie Rotten's actor, meme king and bringer of joy to people worldwide, passed away earlier this week.

I will continue to honor the memory and memery of #1.

Watching the cult of McCain emerge as he crept along, increasingly ailing, has been one of the weirdest things of the last few years. My favorite part is all the faux outrage towards anyone who wouldn't join the chorus of dick sucking eulogies for the guy who’s pretty much universally despised as the embodiment of NeoCon stoogery just because he had a tumor.
 
That was fucking fast. Just yesterday on here I read about his random speech and brain tumor and the old bastard's already dropped dead, holy shit.
