Republican Sen. John McCain, an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero who served for 30 years in the Senate representing Arizona, died Saturday due to complications stemming from brain cancer.

His office said in a statement that his wife Cindy McCain and their family were alongside him when he died.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," his office said.

McCain, 81, was a part of many of the past three decades' most significant political moments. He was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee in a contest he lost to President Barack Obama. He also sought the presidency in 2000, mounting a primary campaign against President George W. Bush.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, the Arizona Republican followed both his father and grandfather, who were four-star admirals, into the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions.

also for those of you who dont know what he did in 'nam that made him so damn infamous well here you go.

But will John Cain be able to sing about his vegetable friends uninterrupted now that he's in a better place? Cindy isn't there, after all.
Okay after posting my trolly comment (which I still stand by, as I don't think McCain was a good person), my sympathy is starting to kick in a little bit:

I had no idea that McCain's mother was still alive. At 106. Holy shit. And according to reports, her mind is still sharp.

It must be difficult to live that long and to see your children pass away. I can't imagine.
I can't either. To raise children, watch them grow up, and fully expect them to outlive you, only to find out you're one of the few to live so long and that means you're probably going to see them die before you do... It's awful.
Alert: Old man dies

I don't get why people are so shocked at this he's 81

Regardless, rest in peace
Some people here thought he was already dead. Others are just surprised he died right after he quit treatment.

buddy I dont care who the hell is in office. you don't give up your fellow man. period. again people were spoon fed fucking feces and didnt give up shit. johnny did. that's my issue.
Kinda funny they knew he was an admirals son. This was before google. That's why a lot of my military friends call him the songbird. Seems he couldn't stop talking.

If you're happy he died, at least do something productive like make a funny meme instead of chiming in with often uninformed autism.

well see to all the people bitching about the recording look up SERE school. your trained not to do this shit now I dont know if they had it back then or not but I'm sure they had something similar.
Nope, the whole psychological resistance aspect of it wasn’t introduced until after Vietnam, and is actually based pretty heavily on the POWs’ experiences.

Regardless of what I said in the other topic, condolences to the family.

You do realize they could get this commonly-known piece of info from other soldiers, no? "Torture the other dude instead, he's an admiral's son.." is a perfectly viable sentence to say when your balls are being electrocuted with car batteries.

I hope they harvest the tumor and use it to establish a cell line. Then John McCain can live forever by technicality, and actually doing something useful for once in his existence.

I've never understood his cult of personality. He literally would not exist without the worst kind of military nepotism. When you crash a plane due to your own error the navy doesn't give you another one- unless of course your father and grandfather were 4 star admirals. He went on to pilot 3 more planes that were destroyed with him in the cockpit that he may or may not be responsible for before the last landed him in the Hanoi Hilton.

I mean, it's cool that he had centrist leanings and was allowed to act on them because his constituents liked him and not his party unlike 99% of the members of congress. And it's nice that his centerism allowed him the make deals and attach his name to important legislation. But he's always been fundamentally defined by his failings to me, like picking Sarah Palin as VP.
