Ghislaine Maxwell has refused to tell US prosecutors the name of her husband, despite speculation that it’s a mysterious British tech CEO.
Maxwell was
arrested and charged in July with six charges relating to her involvement in a sex trafficking ring run by billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The charges include enticing minors as young as 14 between 1994 and 1997.
On Tuesday, she was denied bail as she was deemed a flight risk and the shock detail of her marriage was revealed by prosecutors who claim she is hiding the extent of her wealth.
The identity of Maxwell’s spouse is undisclosed, however she was linked to Scott Borgerson last year when she was found living at his oceanfront mansion in Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts.
Mr Borgerson denied the relationship was romantic back in August. “People keep asking me, but I am not dating Ghislaine, I’m home alone with my cat,” he told the
NY Post.
Prosecutors now say Maxwell bought her sprawling, million-dollar hide-out in Bradford, New Hampshire with a British man she called Scott Marshall.
The real estate agent who handled the sale of the property told the FBI Maxwell
posed as a journalist called “Jen Marshall” and “Janet” while buying the house.
Scott Marshall described himself as retired from the British military and working on a book, prosecutors said. Janet Marshall said she was a journalist.
The real estate agent said the couple both had British accents and they wanted to hastily buy the 63ha property through a wire transfer.
The agent said she learned of Maxwell’s true identity when media reports of her arrest made global headlines.
Mr Borgerson is the British CEO of CargoMetrics — a company that processes data analytics for maritime trade and shipping. The company was recently valued at US$100 million (A$143 million).
Before running the tech company he spent four years working as a US Coast Guard as a commanding officer and a navigator, and an assistant professor at the US Coast Guard Academy.
The news of Maxwell’s marital status were revealed during her
two-hour detention hearing on Tuesday.
The Assistant US Attorney Alison Moe referenced Maxwell’s spouse during discussions of a possible bail package, which was ultimately rejected by the court.
“In addition to failing to describe in any way the absence of proposed co-signers of a bond, the defendant also makes no mention whatsoever about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse whose identity she declined to provide to Pretrial Services,” Ms Moe said during the hearing, which was held via teleconference.
“There’s no information about who will be co-signing this bond or their assets, and no details whatsoever.”
Maxwell’s lawyers had asked for her to be released on a US$5 million bond and said she was at risk of contracting coronavirus in prison.
However prosecutors claimed Maxwell was an “extreme” flight risk and had claimed she bought her luxury New Hampshire home under an alias.
Judge Nathan ultimately agreed with the government, and said her presence in court could not be assured.
Maxwell has also previously been linked to Ted Waitt, the founder of Gateway computers — Forbes reported the pair dated in 2005 and attended Chelsea Clinton’s wedding together. They reportedly broke up in 2011 or 2012.
Maxwell also reportedly had a serious relationship before 1992 with Count Gianfranco Cicogna, an Italian aristocrat, businessman and stunt pilot. He died in 2012 in a plane crash.
