'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

It’s been more than a year since ex-“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett claimed he was attacked by two white supporters of President Donald Trump on a frigid Chicago morning.

After new charges were brought against the actor in mid-February, his attorneys filed an emergency motion with the Illinois Supreme Court, The Chicago Tribune reported, arguing “that Cook County Judge Michael Toomin overstepped his authority and misinterpreted the law when he ordered the appointment of a special prosecutor in Smollett’s case last year.”

Smollett’s attorneys claimed in their filing “that the particular statute Toomin cited to appoint a special prosecutor can only be invoked if the state’s attorney filed a formal petition for recusal — which Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx never did,” the Tribune continued.

Foxx stepped down from prosecuting Smollett and it was discovered later that she agreed to try and get the charges dropped against Smollett. After she stepped down – but did not remove her entire team from the case and instead appointed her top deputy to run the investigation – Toomin said the prosecution became invalid. The judge contended that Foxx did not have the authority to name her own successor.

Smollett’s attorneys, however, claimed Smollett was the only person who had the right to question whether the prosecutor in his case had the authority to prosecute him.

“[If] there, in fact, had been a defect in the authority to prosecute Mr. Smollett, the only person who could properly challenge the validity of the proceedings would be Mr. Smollett — and he has not done so,” his attorneys wrote in the motion.

His attorneys went on to demand the order that appointed the special prosecutor be thrown out and that all charges against the actor be vacated.

The Illinois Supreme Court denied the motion. Smollett’s next hearing will be on March 18, as previously scheduled. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

On February 11, a Cook County grand jury indicted Smollett on “six counts of disorderly conduct alleging he orchestrated the racist and homophobic attack on a frigid night in downtown Chicago,” the Tribune reported. The allegations mirrored those originally brought against the actor last year after it was discovered he fabricated a hate crime against himself.

Smollett claimed on January 29, 2019, that he was attacked by two white men wearing “Make America Great Again” hats around 2:00 a.m. during a polar vortex in Chicago. Smollett claimed the men shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him as they beat him, tied a noose around his neck, and poured bleach on him (they had been apparently carrying these things just randomly while out the night and somehow recognized Smollett). The men allegedly yelled “This is MAGA country” before they left.

Smollett, according to surveillance footage, showed up to his friend’s apartment in Chicago with the noose still around his neck and carrying his sandwich from Subway, which apparently wasn’t damaged in the violent altercation. He was still wearing the noose when police arrived.
The media instantly bought Smollett’s wild claims due to their hatred of Trump and his supporters. It was quickly discovered that Smollett paid two Nigerian brothers to stage the attack against him.

I'm just glad this is being brought up again. I remember following this thread when I was but a lurker. I thought with all the bullshit with him still having the moose around his neck when the cops showed up and the two brothers outright ADMITTING Juicy had payed them off, that something might actually come of it and someone who faked a hate crime would face consequences. It's a lot more believable to have violent hobo muggings than politically targeted lynching of a D-lister. Maybe not as sensational, but easier to fake too.

He's an actor, not a script writer. The actors are just there to memorize the lines they are fed.

frank is an older, black guy who is also gay. So he is old enough to have experienced real incidents of hateful speech or harrassment because he is black and gay. He was genuinely upset by what he thought happened. Frank has likely experienced REAL hate against black and/or gay people from back in the day.

I cannot look at that pic and not laugh. I used to work with lil kids so i am quite adept at assessing kids art. This is like a 3 year olds beginner level of art. Had my students handed me this, i would have guessed it was a picture of a drill, a man and a possible sun or balloon. The man appears to be wearing a necklace or chain.

It just makes no sense. Why on earth create such a laughable and badly drawn image that you cant even tell what is really going on? Its not threatening, its laughable.

He even created a new term! Fear mongrels ! Like when my lil students would attempt to write a mean note to another kid with a curseword on it, except they misspell the curse word. "You is a birch" doesnt have quite the stinging effect that was intended. What do you even do in that moment but laugh and tell the kid they just called the other kid a tree and remind them that curse words are all spelled properly in the dictionary if needed?

Honestly this case has been one that has united people of every color and orientation in collective laughter.

I looked up where the supposed crime happened and had a nice laugh about it. I know that part of Chicago very well.

There are parts of Streeterville that are a little shady, especially at night, due to a lot of indigent homeless people that can be very aggressive. Nearly all of them are black, and they usually stick to harassing white tourists who wander too far away from the Magnificant Mile. The idea that MAGAtards would even be there, let alone would pick a well-dressed black faggot to hate crime rather than any number of the actually vulnerable black people there, is completely laughable.

If he'd claimed the attack was from some eastern european homophobes, it would have been a lot more believable. He just had to make it about Trump.

7. Rein in his ego and keep from doing victory laps after avoiding meaningful punishment after faking a hate crime. Onlookers don't like it when you duck responsibility for something and then turn around and start throwing eggs.

That last one, by the way, is the only reason I'm still emotionally involved in this shit anymore. I fully expected him to walk without consequences just like the other half-dozen people whose high-profile stories of Trump's bigoted America have been revealed as bullshit but then instead of taking the small L and slinking away he doubled down. I'm certain at that point someone of influence was watching and they picked up a phone and just said, "Get this motherfucker."
