'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Smollett, who is gay and black, has said he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack near his Chicago apartment in January 2019. He called Gatson just after the incident and the manager called Chicago police.

Police have said Smollett orchestrated the incident and paid two men who were acquaintances from the "Empire" set -- brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo -- to stage the incident for publicity.

The warrants were signed on December 6, but the judge ordered Google not to disclose them. Google did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Smollett's publicist Pam Sharp declined to comment Wednesday on the search warrant. The former "Empire" actor has repeatedly denied making up or orchestrating the attack.

The special prosecutor, former US Attorney Dan K. Webb, is investigating how State Attorney Kim Foxx's handled the case and her office's decision to end the case against the wishes of the police department.

Webb will have authority to file new charges, if deemed appropriate, against Smollett following his investigation.

Smollett had been charged with 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct, but Foxx suddenly dropped all charges in March. They said he had forfeited $10,000 in bail money and done community service.

The actor faces a civil suit from the city that demands reimbursement for the cost of investigating his reported attack.
He filed a countersuit in November. Smollett's attorneys claim the criminal charges against the actor were brought forth in "bad faith" and "based on the Osundairo Brothers' false, self-serving, and unreliable statements," court documents say.

Facebook, Instagram a twitter were also given orders to give any info they have on any accounts associated with jussies gmail address.

Gatson is jussies " creative director" and was at jussies apartment that night and is the one who insisted on calling the cops. I think jussie set him up as an unwitting witness and did not think frank would call the cops. I wonder what frank thinks of jussie now.

Plus the nigerian brothers are suing jussie too.

Jussie is trying to create good publicity by donating 10,000 to the flint michigan kids for christmas but i dont think thats gonna help him much. Serves him right. I hope he has to file bankruptcy and that he ends up in prison working for pennies an hour.
