'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Chicago police release investigative files, video of alleged staged attack on 'Empire' actor
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police released their investigative files and video Monday of the alleged staged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett in late January.

Police released nearly 70 hours of video, all connected to the Smollett case.


Police bodycam video shows officers arriving at Smollett's apartment in Streetervile. After going with his manager up to his apartment, they are greeted by the star with a rope coiled several times around his neck, claiming that two attackers wearing Make America Great Again hats doused him with bleach and put the noose over his head.

Police blurred Smollett's face in the video that the I-Team obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request because at the time he was considered a victim.

"He doesn't want this to be a big deal, you understand what I'm saying," Smollett's manager tells officers on the video. "The thing that makes me emotional is they put this makeshift loop, what do you call that thing, a noose around his (expletive) neck. I'm sorry, you know. And that is what bothers me, the cut thing doesn't bother me at all. If that makes any sense."

Inside the apartment, the video shows Smollett with the rope strung around his neck, which he tells police was put there by his attackers.

Police ask him if he wants to remove the supposed noose, which he does, and then when informed that a police body camera is recording the whole thing, the actor asks that the camera be turned off.

"You're filming this right?" Smollett's manager asks.

"Yes, this is all data," an officer responds. "It's his house."

"They are filming," Smollett's manager tells the actor. "Can we turn it off?"

"Yeah," the officer replies. "You are giving us permission to shut it off?"

Smollett claimed he was the victim of a vicious hate crime in Streeterville in the late hours of January 29. He said two men physically attacked him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs, threw a chemical liquid on him and looped a rope around his neck.

But the investigation turned on the actor as it continued. Chicago police said he orchestrated the attack with the help of the Osundairo brothers, who he knew. One brother was an extra on "Empire" and the other was Smollett's personal trainer.

Police said Ola and Abel OSundairo took a cab to the pre-arranged attack site. In video from the car, the brothers are disguised in hazmat suits that one tightens around his face. They climb out of the taxi and surveillance video shows them walking down the street to carry out the allegedly staged attack.

Two days after the alleged attack, Chicago police released surveillance images of two people they said they considered persons of interest in the attack, which was taken from that video.

Police said Smollett staged the attack at a corner where he believed a surveillance camera would capture the attack, and that the facial injuries he sustained were likely self-inflicted.

Police also released bodycam video of the Osundairo brothers being detained by police at O'Hare International Airport after returning from Nigeria.

But the key scene from the police video is Smollett sporting the rope during his first encounter with officers, while his manager tells police the actor doesn't want this to become a big deal.

Police initially charged Smollett with one count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. A grand jury then returned an indictment for 16 counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.

All charges against Smollett were dropped in late February in exchange for community service and forfeiture of his $10,000 bond payment. That decision is already under a separate review by the county's inspector general.

A special prosecutor will soon be appointed to look into why Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx dropped the case and whether Smollett should be re-charged.

The special prosecutor's case is sunk. I would recognize the knot used to tie that noose anywhere. It was definitely tied by the Illinois branch of the Teutonic Trump Terrorists. The group uses a common pattern to tie the basic know that allows them to identify each other as a member of the greater order, while adding a unique flair for every cell. I would recognize the IL one anywhere. Jussie was obviously attacked because their is no way he would have known how to tie that specific knot. Thank God above that Kim Foxx was there to see justice was served. Unfortunately it looks like the white patriarchy is going to take a second crack at this brave person of color.

Im guessing that moment was a lot more dramatic in jussies head than it was in reality. He probably thought the cops would start crying and would promise to hurt these people for him like nic cage in 8mm.

Anybody who wants to be an actor should be sectioned.

Kamala Harris did. So did Senator Booker. The writers of Empire did too and wrote a troll post after charges were dropped. The cast of Empire has supposedly been behind him too, but that might have changed after the show got cancelled due to his shenanigans.
 
Here's what I'm most curious about. Judicial outcome aside, the Smolett case has reached sufficient cultural penetration that people are going to be pointing at it whenever a hate crime is given national media attention. Good or ill, people will cry "SMOLETT" for the next decade at least.

So my question is, how likely is it that the progressive machine protecting him are going to drop him like a bad habit now? His little show has no doubt attracted too many (and the wrong kind of) eyes for their liking, and now figures who sought to make the hoax investigation go away are under the microscope themselves. Are they going to cut their losses and throw him to the wolves at this point, or triple/quadruple-down?

The show didn't get cancelled because of this. It was already circling down the shitter when all of this happened. It had been hemorrhaging viewers for seasons at this point. If anything, it reinvigorated interest in it because white people had never heard of it. This incident was certainly the final nail in the coffin, but the casket was getting lowered into the ground when in happened.

Provided he keeps the Progressive, anti Trump faith, they'll continue to back him. The only principle these people seem to have in my experience is to protect their own and shun those who reject enlightenment. Hating Trump is religion among wokeists, just recall the Sandmann debacle. I'll be surprised if this is the event to break the pattern.

The left dont protect their own at all. The goalposts move so often, even grandfathered-in, progressive demigods arent safe from suddenly becoming problematic in the eyes of the directionless lynchmob.
They have no real principals, just these poorly defined, constantly shifting abstract theories of perfection that are impossible to achieve.
 
On the Chicago subreddit, any posting related to Jussie is bombarded with complaints about altright Trump Canadian (yes they think Canada is trying to take over the Chicago reddit) racists and how they don’t want to hear it.

Like all fake hate crimes, the left will try to suppress and downplay the fact that this one was fake and bringing it up makes you an unperson.

In the abstract sense, I mean. You only belong if you toe the line, as soon as you falter you're no longer "one of us" and become a valid target. There's a reason GGers refer to the formerly-woke being shoved into the Pit. Sometimes it seems like stepping out of line brings extra force down on former allies. As if it's being done to set an example for potential apostates.
