Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Personally, the worst thing about this whole shit show is just the fact that several parties are under fire for this dude's colossal stupidity, when really the moron (and those who helped acquit said moron) should be taking the blame.

You have a bunch of folks trying to pin the blame on everyone of the same race as Jussie (some in this thread, even), as if that makes any sense at all. In reality, sure, some hood rat moron might try defending this fuck, but black people aren't a hive mind, and literally anyone who isn't exceptional would see who's clearly in the wrong.

Then, you have conservatives and whites getting heat for something they didn't even do, and are still being accused of "racism" for pointing out that this clearly isn't the justice system at it's best. Sorry fellas, but Drumpf didn't have anything to do with this one.

It's all so damn frustrating, I really hope this dude gets what he deserves.

He was supposedly being paid $100k per episode. Probably spent money like it wouldn't stop coming tho.

Exactly. Don't underestimate people's ability to not see past their own nose.

I had a friend who was a musician on a very famous, very long running late night TV show. This musician was a close friend of mine. So close, that over the years I had seen my friend's paychecks AND tax returns. I know for a fact my friend was making just over $500k a year to play in the late night show's band.

I'm also a musician. At the time I was playing in an off broadway show. Off broadway pays musicians half of broadway pay, so $125 a show. A few years ago, a writer's strike hits. Late night show goes on hiatus. Within two weeks, my friend was begging me, to let them sub for me 1 or 2 days a week. My friend, who makes $500k a year, was begging me to let them sub for me at $125 a show after just two weeks of no work.

Mind you, this friend of mine had been on this show for years, so there should have been a tidy nest egg, you'd think. Never underestimate a musician or actor's ability to blow through endless sums of cash. We're not known for our fiscal responsibility.

Kim Foxx on Smollett's Sealed Records: dindu! I dindu, he dindu, we dindu, wouldn't you like dindu, too?
In the interest of full transparency, I would prefer these records be made public. However, in this case, Illinois law allows defendants in certain circumstances to request that public records remain sealed. Smollett chose to pursue that avenue, and so my office is barred from releasing those records without his approval.

The b-list actor Jussie Smollett was in charge of sealing those records? How fucky.

As a public figure, Smollett’s alleged unstable actions have probably caused him more harm than any court-ordered penance could. None of that, though, should detract from two facts that must be able to coexist: First, falsely reporting a hate crime is a dangerous and unlawful act, and Smollett was not exonerated of that in this case. Second, our criminal justice system is at its best when jails are used to protect us from the people we rightly fear, while alternative outcomes are reserved for the people who make us angry but need to learn the error of their ways without seeing their lives irrevocably destroyed.

You know what might be funny? If his acting career managed to survive, but only by allowing himself to be typecast as minstrel-type characters forever after. That might be a fitting punishment.

He deserves the worst fate an actor can suffer through, a main role in a Full House style family sitcom.

Jussie Smollett had avoided jail but now he have to cope with the ransom of glory, first by being ridiculed and mocked by Chris Rock and SNL.

Timcast vlogged about this.

Chris Rock Roasts Jussie Smollett at NAACP Awards: ‘What the Hell Was He Thinking?’
Although Chris Rock was told to steer clear of the Jussie Smollett case at the NAACP Image Awards, the comedian couldn’t help but toss a couple barbed jokes towards the “Empire” actor.

“They said no Jussie Smollett jokes. I know. What a waste of white skin. You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here. F—ing running Hollywood,” Rock joked.

“What the hell was he thinking?” Rock asked. “From now on, you’re Jessie from now on. You don’t even get the ‘U’ no more. That ‘U’ was respect. You don’t get no respect from me.”

Well, at least Jussie knows that if he ever wanted to try and save his career by making the jump to comedy, he'd probably be funnier than Chris Rock is these days.

Personally, I just can't understand why people are talking about this hilarious multi-car pileup of incompetence, racism, and corruption instead of... uhhhh... some greasy kike pederast?

Folks are salty SNL mocked Jussie:

Chris Rock went against the will of the Black Hollywood Mafia huh? Oof, expect to see unearthed tapes of him making off color jokes we're all supposed to be SHOCKED to hear.

I'm probably just being wildly optimistic, but are famous black people realizing they can form their own opinions separate from the Yass Queen Beyonce brigade (I'm actually not up on which black celebrities are political anymore... nobody can ever shut up about beyonce though)
