'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The seemingly open-and-shut criminal cases against convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, though over a decade apart, have led some legal experts to compare the two.

Epstein, who pleaded guilty to two counts of soliciting prostitution from minors, spent only 13 months in jail as a part of a now-controversial sweetheart plea agreement back in 2008. As a part of the agreement, law enforcement opted not to continue the investigation into other victims or alleged perpetrators associated with Epstein.

The plea agreement he received garnered scrutiny following a Miami Herald investigation. One of the prosecutors who brokered the agreement is current Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta.

A judge ruled the that the plea agreement Epstein received violated state laws because the prosecutors did not notify the victims prior to the agreement.

Some are comparing the sweetheart plea agreement Epstein received to the charges being dropped against Smollett.

Smollett, 36, was charged with 16 counts for his role in allegedly orchestrating a fake hate crime, but the charges were unexpectedly dropped Tuesday morning.

Smollett alleged in January that two white men attacked him in the middle of the night as he was walking home from a Chicago-area “Subway” restaurant. He told police that the men poured a bleach-like substance on him, tied a noose-like rope around his neck and shouted racist and homophobic slurs.

The Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx communicated with Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff Tina Tchen and members of the Smollett family, which led to her stepping back from the case. She claimed to have recused herself, but her office released a statement Thursday saying she only “colloquially” recused herself.

Fox News obtained an internal email from Foxx asking assistant state’s attorneys to dig for examples of similar situations in which the charges were dropped.

The FBI is now opening an investigation into why the charges were dropped. Similarly, the Department of Justice announced last month that they are looking into how Epstein got his plea deal.

CNN legal analyst Laura Coates pointed out the lucky breaks both of them had in a tweet that reads, “While the topic of #JussieSmollett felony indictments converted to wrist slaps is on everyone’s, including @realDonaldTrump mind, can we also chat about the prosecutorial decisions about #JeffreyEpstein?” with a link to a Vox.com article about Epstein.

“Smollett may have benefited from celebrity justice,” Georgetown University law professor Jonathan Turley also tweeted. “Like the Epstein case, it is not clear if the problem was an absence of blind justice or of equal justice. What is clear, however, is that this represents a travesty of justice.”

Conservative pundit and The Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro tweeted in February, “If Epstein weren’t politically connected is there any doubt he’d be in prison for the rest of his life?”

He weighed in Tuesday on the charges being dropped against Smollett, saying, “Letting Smollett off the hook is a pure political calculation by Cook County. It is indeed that simple. The facts are in public view.”

Epstein preyed on vulnerable people, Smollet exploited a vulnerable social climate. Both should have had to have suffered fitting punishments for their crimes.

Smollet gaming a system were oppression points function like old school social currency is just a novel approach to time honored tradition.

The spin to make it a black and white race issue seems to be ignoring the 2 (((elephants))) in the room. Amazing that. Almost like it's being used as a cudgel to beat race relations about the head with, whilst ignoring the issue of social class.
 
I've gotta say... it's looking like this isn't just going to vanish quietly like they wanted.

What the fuck kind of absolute moron is this guy... he gets the fucking sweetest deal of the century, walks on incredible charges, and has both the tiny brain and giant balls necessary to decide to fucking SUE THE CITY.

I bet someone behind the scenes saw that and did a facepalm so epic they're still unconscious.

For this reason, I barely even care if he actually does time. He’s already done something much more valuable for society by majorly redpilling the masses way more than any conservative voice could ever hope to do.
 
They should make Jussie, as part of his community service, coach a little league hockey team.

In my experience, it's just swimming that is kryptonite for black people. They love pools, though, as long as they can pack into the shallow end and stand around, something that I really just don't understand the appeal of. If you don't believe me, take a look at any community pool in any northeastern city in the country during the summer. An ice skating rink is basically the world's shallowest pool and I'm sure he'd love it.
 
He's connected to the Obamas, at least one democratic presidential hopeful, and as of last week he's property of the Disney corporation. Dude could start blasting white people on live TV and not get charged at this point.
 
I wonder if Kim Foxx thought it was worth it to risk her career for a b-list gay actor. Did she think she would t get caught or because it’s chicago, corruption was just accepted?

Perhaps not the jail time she deserves, but she's got enough of her own side visibly angry at her that if they just let her keep sitting there without consequences they'll all look like ball-less wonders.

That's the thing about the posturing that Rham and the others are doing. They have to follow through to at least some extent or they've basically shown that someone can piss them off with impunity. Y'know, other than Trump. It's now about maintaining their own power as much as anything, so there's a fairly good chance she'll at least be kicked out of office.

According to the woke black idiots on twitter, Chicago is the most racist city on the planet towards blacks people.

Theoretically, Jussie should be out picking cotton and Kim Foxx fired and in jail or something. Geeeeee, wonder why neither of those things happened and yet they’re still crying about how corrupt and racist Chicago is.
