'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Jussie Smollett's lawyer has finally offered an explanation for why he told police he thought his Nigerian attackers were white: they could have been wearing make-up.

In an interview on Today, Tina Glandian claimed that Smollett did not recognize the Abel and Ola Osundairo when they attacked him on January 29 and that it still has not been proven that it was them, despite the fact that Smollett identified a photograph of the pair as his attackers before he was ever arrested and even though they had just been on the phone with him.

When he learned it was them once they were in custody, Glandian said, Smollett 'found it hard to believe' because he had told that he could make out one had 'pale or white skin' around his eyes beneath the ski mask he was wearing.

It was not a lie, she insisted, adding that the reason for it could have been that the brothers were in 'disguise'.

'He did tell police that from what he saw, he thought it was white or pale skin, that's what he initially said.

'Obviously, you can disguise that. You can put make-up on,' she said.

She went on to point to a 2016 YouTube video of Abel Osundairo, the brother in question, where he is wearing white make-up to perform a Joker monologue as potential proof of her theory.

'There's a video, it took me all of five minutes when I was looking into the brothers, to of one of the brothers in whiteface doing the Joker monologue,' she said.

The reason the justice system needs to appear to be effective is the same reason we need to have a justice system at all. If people don't feel justice was served, they will take matters into their own hands. And mob justice is neither fair nor consistent. And usually leads to revenge anyway, so it never ends.

Exactly. Despite all the people who love to lecture about the ideal purpose of the justice system as being rehabilitation, punishment in the public eye is a crucial part of it too for reasons you mention. We are animals with an inherent sense of fairness and a predictable anger response to injustice. We need our legal system pound of flesh from criminals or we'll take a few dozen pounds ourselves.

Bullshit like this is actually going to lead to an increase in things like lynchings. Do you guys really want the fucking KKK to become sympathetic figures to people fed up with a broken justice system?

Nah. The KKK is never again going to be seen as sympathetic to a majority of Americans. And blacks aren't going to be routinely lynched either, much to the disappointment of so many black Americans who define themselves by their sense of eternal victimhood.

But someone might take a shot at Smollett or someone like him. And nobody should be surprised when it eventually happens.

Personally, call it a conspiracy if you want I think that is indeed their intention. This whole "White supremacist everywhere" rhetoric is being pushed to try and cause a rise of White supremacy or at least optics of it so then they can propose a way to solve the White supremacy (which I bet would end up in violence) and would be caused by their own actions. It's pretty despicable and horrendous either way, same tactic they've been trying to pull in Europe.

Then it just becomes an issue of what the full end game is, many people have different theories but it looks lose-lose to me.

Black people turned out in record numbers to vote for him, and while they were at it voted against gay marriage.

The grasping by the left for any other possible explanation was pretty hilarious, to the point that they were unironically insisting that a ton of white bigots came out of the woodwork to vote for Prop 8 but also decided not to vote either for or against the black guy running for President.
