'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I honestly think that the Smollett thing would be better in the long run. Removing one corrupt official in Chicago will ultimately do nothing as an equally corrupt replacement is waiting to take their place.

Having a fake hate crime made national news like this and to see the culprit punished would be a strong message across the the whole country.

I'd agree with you but I'd lay dollars to donuts that he wants to let someone off their chain and everyone around him is telling him not to start this kind of shit eighteen months before an election. For a city who hates cops so much, I'd love to propose a social experiment of removing the regular cops for like 2-3 weeks from the equation and replacing them with "woke" cops to see what happens. Then follow that up with like a week of no cops at all. Will the city thrive or will it turn to a toxic wasteland like the Mojave in fallout? There was this Wyatt Cenac series on HBO last year that proposed something similar for NYC. They pushed for 'restorative justice', which is removing accountability and punishment for crimes, basically because 'he a good boy/dindu' crap. They overarching message of the entire series was community policing, about getting police out of neighborhoods and replacing them with untrained and unaccountable civilians. They did present the perspective of the police, the voice of reason, on the matter, but mostly they were slanted towards police abolition. Community policing is a incredibly braindead idea. That is guaranteed to turn 100% corrupt within the first months. You end up with a sort of micro-warlord situation, where a small cadre of thugs turn it into a racket. Really, dumbest fucking idea.

Police at least do have accountability, and with body cameras we see more and more that so many cries about police malfeasance in the past were probably lies, with legit abuses capable of being outed and righted. Are the police in NYC really that pervasive in shithole ghetto areas? In my experience it was the lack of police that made those areas so dangerous, with the one sure way to chase away the thugs was to be lucky enough to passed by a nearby police cruiser.
