Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I listened to Mark Geragos on his podcast with Adam Carolla and he talked about being on Juicy's legal team and it legit made me angry because he came out with all the busted, disproven talking points and was trying to pin it all on the brothers.
I know he's a lawyer and an armenian but I didn't realise he was that sleazy.

Eh, he's just doing what defense attorneys have to do. Jussie may be a scumbag, but he's still entitled to a vigorous defense.

I get it, and I still enjoy listening to the podcast. Just gets irritating to hear the nonsense repeated, especially when it doesn't even fit the things Justin himself has said. It's like, c'mon bro, you're better than this. I get the feeling that Geragos thinks (probably correctly) than if they fart out a big enough cloud of whataboutism around things the media said and things that CPD did, they can obfuscate the actual issue of it being a fake hate crime and get him off that way.

I can't remember which Orwell book I read this quote, probably Down and Out in Paris and London:

"Trust a snake before a Jew, a Jew before a Greek, but never trust an Armenian."

The problem is that has no effect on the 12 people in the jury who hear what the evidence really is, divorced from any ability to spin it with irrelevant socjus "muh privelage" arguments. One of the first questions they ask you as a potential jurist, aside from if you personally know any of the decedents/prosecutors/witnesses, is if you've been closely following the case in the media, as those who've barely paid attention are sought out over those who've followed with soap-opera like glee.... the conventional wisdom being an uninterested party has probably not already made up their minds/come to some conclusions about what 'should' happen next and will be more impartial, to both sides' arguments.

While he is performing for future jury members to a degree, I think the bigger picture here is to get the public on "his" side to the point the prosecutors will offer a better plea deal for fear of public backlash if he can spin this as "The DA is wassist for wanting jail time for a silly lil' ol' felony that wasn't that big a deal really....."

Problem is, people are fucking SICK of this kind of shit, and the smug, rich, privileged SOB who got on TV to cry crocodile tears over something he did to himself is the perfect person for the frustrated public to vent on.

He literally made this argument in the podcast. Even Adam got sick of it and basically said "Stay silent, Mark. Let's say we can know he's guilty but have a problem with how he was handled" - I might be biased but I got the feeling he was a bit over hearing about how innocent poor Juicy Toilet was considering it's pretty fuckin' obvious he orchestrated this clusterfuck.

I hope you're right, I want to believe it but I feel it might be :optimistic:
I don't want it to, but I think it'll work again this time.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but I have never liked that obvious lies are considered a vigorous defense.

I can't wait to hear the "motive" the defense concocts to explain what the gay Nigerians had to gain by hate-crime gay bashing their own training client, while not even bothering to steal his sammich. That's sure to be a speckled doozie of Lawyer Fu weaselspeak.

This HAS to go to trial.

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere, but Ellen Page finally said something about this mess after that teary-eyed meltdown she had on the Late Show. If you don't feel like reading it, it basically boils down to "hate crimes against LGBT people are still real even if Jussie turns out to be full of shit, y'all." She mentions him once in the entire column and spends the rest of it talking about her own activism and how we should always believe victims, etc etc.

If they're obvious lies, they won't work in court.

Why does anyone care about Ellen Page's opinions on anything?

Ellen Page thinks you should care because cause she's an out-and-proud lesbian.

Did I mention Ellen Page is gay?

Juno was funny but not this fucking masterpiece and she was only okay in Trailer Park Boys. Her role in Inception was so shoehorned in, it was just annoying.

That said, who the fuck cares what any celebrity says? Holy shit the biggest fucking load of faggotry who need to be shot.

I'm watching the second half of this episode right now and Phil is already saying Smollett is lying. I'm going to try to catch the first half when it airs again later tonight. Phil says Jussie is experiencing "duping delight" and that's why he's smiling while he's talking to Robin in that interview. That lesbo-man-thing Sally Kohn is on the show too so have your antacids ready.
