'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The video is mostly about American constitutional rights. You don't have to be an asshole, but do be aware that having a lawyer present is recommended. If nothing else it helps protect you from those "process" crimes that's the current rage.

That's the civilian equivalent of approaching the car with a gun drawn. Golden rule, meatbags. Cops like any other people can be assholes too. Don't escalate unless you need to and when in doubt, remember the law of the jungle: he does have a gun. While he may be prosecuted later for shooting you without provocation, that doesn't bring you back to life. Just remember...

As an aside, I wonder who purchased those guns and why? I can see the shotgun being purchased illegally, but a .22LR seems like a strange choice to purchase on the street/under the table.

That's one of the reasons I've warned cops to angle away from the 'stop resisting/escalation' tactics. It's bad enough in the ghetto; imagine when every person's hand is turned against you, both overtly and subtly.

I'm honestly not up on Chicago's retarded gun control laws, but I was under the impression they primarily applied to handguns and SIMI AUTOMATIC A SALT RAFFLES. The Mossy might have been banned under some cosmetic bs, but I doubt shotguns and rimfire rifles are banned. Those two possessing them would have been of course.

Ola was taken into custody at O’Hare Airport on February 13 along with his brother, Abimbola “Abel” Osundairo. In addition to being bodybuilders, the pair are also aspiring actors. TMZ reports that both brothers have been “booked for batter.”

On January 29, Smollett told police in Chicago that he had been assaulted while leaving a Subway restaurant, close to the actor’s apartment on North Lower Water Street around 2 a.m. The “Empire” actor described his assailants as being clad in black and wearing ski masks. TMZ was the first report that Smollett told cops his attackers referred to him as a “n*****” and a “f*****.” On February 1, Abel Osundairo posted a video to Instagram showing him in Nigeria. In January 2019, Abel posted a video to Instagram using Smollett’s song “Ha Ha (I Love You) as a backing track.

Ola and Abel’s lawyer, Gloria Schmidt, told CBS Chicago that her clients “are baffled about why they are people of interest. It’s an awful thing that happened to Jussie, but it’s not my guys.” Schmidt also said that Smollett and the Osundairo brothers are familiar to each other from the gym.

In a June 2018 Instagram video, one of the brothers is seen walking on his hands on a treadmill inside the private gym in Smollett's luxury apartment building.

Last week, police discovered a Chilli Habanero hot sauce bottle which seemed to contain bleach (above). It was found near where Smollett says he was attacked and had bleach poured on him . It was found 10 days after the attack.

I want a little gay boy who might watch this to see that I fought the f*** back. They ran off,' I didn't,' he said.

He was overcome with emotion when presented with the prospect that his attackers might not be found.

'Let's just hope that they are found.

'Let's not go there yet. I was talking to a friend and I said,"I just hope they find them." And she said, "Sweetie, they're not going to find them."

Seems reasonable. What would be hilarious to me is if they got rolled up on some unrelated gun charges based on what was found at their home when they had nothing to do with the hoax. That's the twist this story needs.

It’s possible these images are post police search where they tore the place up but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just filthy based on who they are and where they came from.

This never passed the smell test because first who would know where to find Jussie at 2am in Chicago? Second, why would anyone randomly carry rope for a noose or bleach around with you at 2am? Third, the poorly made threat sent via mail.
 
I wonder if Jussie is going try to say that these are the guys that attacked him, but he didn’t orchestrate the attack? It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he claims that.

I hope to god he's forced between telling that it's a hoax or that those 2 attacked him cause you know he will roll on them and then play the gay angle to make people not believe them. I just want him to keep lying himself into a corner and stoking these dipshit liberals in frothing rage where their minds will break when the truth comes out. This story isn't gonna be memory holed, there's too much interest in seeing it solved and made as an example from both sides. Personally, I think they need to look into his email and texts to see if he had any contact with Harris or Booker.
