'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Except there's a difference between simply not speaking to them and acting like an exceptional child and throwing what amounts to a tantrum. No cop is going to shoot someone who's simply saying "I'm not going to answer your questions without my attorney present".

You're half right. "Don't talk to police" is sound advice if you've committed a crime and are being questioned by the police. Its terrible advice if you're caught speeding or committed some other summary offense because it just escalates the situation and may lead to an arrest.

In other words, don't be this guy.

The correct response when they ask you "do you know how fast you were going?" is "To the best of my knowledge, the legal speed limit". After that let him tell you how fast you were going and prepare to pay your ticket. If you say "I don't know" then they can also get you for distracted driving.

If you are involved in an accident where someone got hurt this is doubly true. The cops are going to try and pin it on someone (they have too) and you don't want it to be you. Most insurance plans have legal defense in their coverage policies (and if yours does not have it, get it). You can call your insurance company and have them send out a lawyer. It may not show up at that moment, but you can always tell your side of the story later.

Unless they've got a stick up their ass, it's really not that hard to talk your way out of a ticket if you're cordial to the officer. I've been pulled over for speeding a number of times, and have only ever gotten a single ticket.

I don’t think this dumbass is anywhere near as complex as a fiddle. And the cops don’t even have to play him. He’s playing himself. And you better believe the Cops are enjoying this. They hate the magic shield of celebrity. Watching one so fuck themselves over, right there on the public stage, while they have to do nothing but watch, take notes, and not say what they know, is glorious to them.

They just wanted to tell him about an amazing investment opportunity concerning royalty in their homeland and then things spun wildly out of control.

I've had a few experiences with cops and have been totally honest with them. Even when I confessed straight up what I'd done the automatic assumption from the cop was that I was a higher level criminal rather than just an idiot who'd got caught over stupid shit. If I pulled a "never talk to the police without a lawyer" trick then I'd have suffered ten times the hassle with police that I have.

I was joking about it being a Jew trap, but I do think it's really bad advice which would cause huge problems in society. If white people co-operated with police at the levels of the blacks then police wouldn't be able to solve any crime and life for everyone gets worse.

Black people refusing to give their name or any details of what they're doing to police is precisely what sets off the police in to thinking they are doing something. So the cop's extra interested in the guy, the guy then goes on a "you're racist" whine and things just get worse from there.

Got a link proving that refusal to pay for the TV licence does result in nothing, because it sounds like bullshit to me. I believe that TV licence deniers as much as I believe in the sovereign citizens whackos.
 
Don't seek legal representation as soon as possible because the cops will try to fuck you either way? Sure, that checks out. I mean, I've had a run in with the cops where the truth was an absolute defense (after I hid the handle of Jack Daniels in a snow bank) but I'd not recommend it.
