'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime
By Sandra Gonzalez, CNN

Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382

And why in the fuck would you get to redact your own phone records anyway? It's a goddamn criminal investigation - you don't get to tell the police what is and is not relevant to the crime committed.

This guy is an asshole. I hope this detonates his career and he starves in a gutter.
Because black people think the police are out to get them and that he’s so important (including his contacts) the cops would go through his phone and find incriminating evidence to prosecute him or his friends.

He and the rest of black twatter are insane.

He's a Hollywood faggot. He's probably got disgusting videos, names of drug dealers and hundreds of Grindr contacts on his phone. I'm not surprised there's no way he'll hand it over.

The police might be telling the truth that he hasn't handed enough over, or they might be lying in the hope that they'll force him to hand the phone over.

I know on my phone I can check where I've been and when on Google Maps. If he did make it up there's no way he can risk giving the phone over.

If he's ever had anything dodgy on his phone he's probably gone all Hillary Clinton on it and bleached everything. Even if he was beaten by the Phanton MAGA muggers it would be more important to hide your drug deals and gay vids.

It is a virtual certainty that his location info from his phone can be had by police without needing his phone in hand. That info is routinely harvested and sold by carriers to 3rd parties who offer it to law enforcement/bounty hunters/private detectives.

Or if they have the legal balls, all the info they want can be had from carrier. Probably, depending on if he used cell service for call as opposed to internet-based calling via some app.

Maybe they already have, and want his phone to see if he deleted things to support his claim. That would help them out if they charge him with false reporting or whatever, I would think.

Isn't this all shady shit police do but can never admit to doing?

If Smollet was accused of murdering a child I've got no problem with the police doing shady shit like this to find out if he did it. But while I hate hoax hating cunts, this crime is way too minor for the police to step over the line to nail him for.

The practice I was referring to is being done by cell carriers, the police are blameless.

Supposedly the carriers in US are to cease this by March at the earliest.

No. It's commonly-known and regularly done. The cellular companies are obliged to cooperate with any criminal investigation. A subpoena can be used to compel it but it's not typically needed.

My question to you is, why is the severity of a crime a determining factor for you as to how seriously the police should treat an investigation? A broken law is a broken law; it should be investigated and prosecuted, if appropriate, like any other crime. It's not a traffic stop for a broken taillight; if it really is a hoax Smollett knowingly wasted hours of LEO resources that could have otherwise been put toward things like your hypothetical child murder.

Is that enough for you?

Eh, I'm not gonna jump on "Why hide your personal info if you didn't do anything wrong" bandwagon because I sure as hell am not going to just hand over my phone records to the cops, even though there's nothing remotely interesting in them.

This is obviously a hoax, but no need to be silly about it.

I mean, the biggest give away is... why would these dudes do a half assed "lynching" where the victim is not strangled or hung in any way, why pour, or squirt bleach on someone if you're planning on murdering them? Why tie a rope around someone's neck if you're not planning to hurt them with it?

Are we supposed to believe he fought off these maga ninjas after they got a rope around his neck and bruised his rib?

I'm not American so I don't know the wording of the constitution, but doesn't one of the amendments include the right not to suffer from unnecessary search?

I didn't realise having a mobile phone meant agreeing that the police were allowed to just check up on you for no reason just to check if you've done anything wrong. ATM this hoaxing faggot is just a witness, if being a witness means having the police search everything about you means that the nigger are right and everyone should just refuse to talk to the cops.

I think that police who routinely break the law should be sent to jail. However, breaking the law to catch a murder or a terrorist I'm not going to lose sleep about. I think the entire USA should be up in arms about Obama using the IRS and FBI to break political opponents. I don't think America becoming a police state is a good thing.

I don't care about bounty hunters and Ad companies using these services.

The police aren't blameless if they are buying the data. I don't think they are permitted to do it and if they were busted doing it then the scandal surrounding the police would be 100 times worse than the faggot admitting he faked it.

I think the most likely scenario is that he was shoved to the ground by someone in passing, and everything else was elaborated by him for oppression points.
One commntator suggested he was croozin for dick or drugs and got slapped around.Probably phone evidence to back that up, hence his trying to redact the recs.

That's one of those areas where the ideal conflicts with the real. We wish the police would treat all crime equal but nobody has the resources for it.

I agree with you on the spirit of things. That said, it's precisely because those resources are limited that filing a false report should be pursued to the fullest extent.

True dat. But then I'm in favor of the cool and unusual punishment. (Like make them wash the cop cars.)

That’s actually neither Cool nor Unusual. It’s what the Judge calls being sentenced “Community Service”. In most places you are either mowing lawns or washing blood puke and feces out of the Police cars.

I meant as something other than a fine or jail. I do have many MANY more ideas for you meatbag.

Let's make a few things clear:

1) The police are not going to search anybody's phone unless they believe a crime has been committed, and all searches conducted without the express permission of the person being searched will be subject to legal process/supervision.

2) There are loopholes police can use to obtain evidence that would normally require a legal search, but they would almost certainly not use such loopholes in a high profile case against people who can and will sue the department into oblivion.

3) I don't think people are angry that witnesses are not turning over their phones to police, but rather the lack of cooperation from Jussie about the crime he reported and supposedly wants solved. Imagine calling the police to report a burglary and then not letting them step foot onto your property. If you expect results, then you need to assist the police as they conduct the investigation. Yeah, it sucks. Yeah, its invasive. But YOU are the one who made the call and brought them into it.

Well, if he was a real pro he'd go the Brianna Wu route and routinely accuse the cops of being in league with his attackers. Not everyone is at that level, of course.

If this turns out to be totally legit I think I will have a coronary over the shock.

Can they tell how fresh the bleach is? Can you test a bottle that had bleach in it and determine approximately how old the residue might be?

By the way, if bleach was dumped on you your clothes would be ruined. And at sub zero temperatures you know he was dressed pretty well. Even a drop of bleach will leave a spot. Not to mention that bleach burns skin. Ever clean with bleach sans gloves? Not pleasant.

People are trying real hard to push this as a hate crime and hoping the public is too damn woke to realise that it's bunk.
