Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

He fucking spelled "baited" wrong. Or... did the law firm spell it wrong? He has the misspelling in quotes, but he didn't write (sic) after...

But yes, this is normal, people who are victims of crimes by magical maga ninjas typically lawyer up and insist the police totally believe them.

It's called the bigotry if low standards. You can't expect a person of color to have the self control or morality of a white person, so hold them to a lower standard! Aww, look, they think they're people!
I think how the CPD is handling this situation is more akin to this:
Nothing would have been done about this if he wasn't an actor. Although, I do think that Obama setting race relations back a couple decades does make police departments hypersensitive to issues of race.

Clarification: Sunshine Sachs is a PR firm, not legal counsel. That said, it's odd that he's now allowing himself to be represented when he was so eager to speak on the matter himself a week or two ago.

That's a pretty defensive statement. "Look, the police chief said I was a victim ok? So I'm definitely definitely a victim".

I think they have to at least initially refer to you as a victim. But it's like they're trying to argue that it actually proves something.

When someone hires a crisis management PR firm, they are guilty as fuck.
That is absolutely untrue, and is akin to saying that "the only people who want a lawyer present while being questioned by police are guilty". There are plenty of reasons to hire crisis comms firms other than actual wrongdoing on the part of the individual or group contracting them.

To be clear though, in this case I do think he made the attack up and is trying to preemptively spin it.

Fair points, I should have been more clear: given this situation, where he's still officially a crime victim per the media and police, he hired a crisis management team because he's guilty as fuck of filing a false report and is trying to limit the fallout.

Yes, there are situations where people need such a firm because they are getting an unjust trial by media and they need help. This isn't one of them.

Using bleach to ruin someone's clothes is some catty fag shit, imo.

That's the dead giveaway with most of these hoaxes. A lot of leftists have never met an open Trump supporter, so when they try to mimic one, it's based on their fantasy of what a Trump supporter is and generally feels really inaccurate and uncomfortable. He probably thought to himself, "What would a Drupf supporter hate?..... Right! He'd die inside if I ruined his $700 Louis Vuitton leather free vegan belt with something... I'll throw bleach on my custom ordered Balenciaga Speed slip-ons and it will look like those dumb rednecks did it!"

A real interaction with a redneck would have been more like, "So you're that queer from the television. Hmmm..."

Why would he have to redact his own phone data if he dindu nuffin illegal?

And why in the fuck would you get to redact your own phone records anyway? It's a goddamn criminal investigation - you don't get to tell the police what is and is not relevant to the crime committed.

This guy is an asshole. I hope this detonates his career and he starves in a gutter.

This guy's stock is probably through the roof. He's an actor. The people in charge of hiring those surely appreciate the fact that he had to interact with the evil police to start a conversation about totally real Trump nazis throwing chemicals on PoCs in downtown Chicago.

The people in charge of hiring, maybe. The people who worry about 20th Century Fox's bottom line? Doubtful. The powerbrokers in Hollywood may be mostly liberal, but the bankrollers aren't.

I think that any director or producer would rather not deal with such a person.

Maybe if another pregnant woman gets beaten to death in a Nike sweatshop, Jussie can be the next Kapernick.

Also the conversation that Jussie is going to eventually spark is one where everyone has to address the reality that a black man is more likely to be struck by lightning than be the victim of racially targeted street violence in modern America.

I assumed it was meant to have racist connotations — bleaching the “black” off of him, which, like you said, is way more something an SJW would come up with. Skin bleaching has historically been a response to racism and colorism, i.e. something black people do to themselves to seem more attractive, but I’ve never heard of racists calling for black people to bleach their skin.
