'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The fine will be enormous because they can fine you what your false report cost the police. So Jussie, if he faked this, is looking to reimburse the CPD for the THOUSANDS of man hours they put into it on top of the cost of use of equipment and other resources (including, I'd imagine, calling in the FBI to help with the investigation). I wouldn't be surprised if the fine ends up being in the high six or low seven figure range, possibly more.

I'm all for having this guy reimburse the police but THOUSANDS of hours spent investigating an assault? I think that's a little high. To reach that you'd have to have a couple of officers working 12 hour days for a month and a half exclusively on this case. I don't think that's happening.

I think sources said that there were between 12 and 20 detectives assigned to this case. So while thousands may be a little high, there could very well be over a thousand man hours put into this investigation.

Probably a cop or two will get frustrated and comment publicly it's obviously bullshit, then we can shift to a narrative about how cops hate black people and whether or not it was justified to fire that cop. That’s Emmanuel in a nutshell though. Who knows what his actual politics are aside from winning. And I’m sure he knows that pandering to SJWs doesn’t actually win elections, even in Chicago. Most of Obama’s pandering to the wokeset happened behind the scenes with very little publicity (how many regular people know that homeless men can just identify their way into a women’s shelter?), and I think that had more to do with coddling big Democratic donors and organizations. SJWs themselves don’t have any money.

I’ve gotten the impression that he’s a bit persona non grata when it comes to the national party because he’s seen as aggressive and arrogant, along with being blamed, fairly or unfairly, for Chicago’s current status as Murder City USA.

But he must be effective in some way- fundraising, tactics- to not be kicked out entirely.
