'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Honestly, the guy deserves it for having a name as stupid as "Jussie". It sounds like those stupid names that ultra-homos make up for their buttholes like "bussy".

This shit has to be a trick/drug pick up gone wrong - it's so comically over the top that it sounds like something that Brianna Wu would claim happened to him. I mean, how in the hell can two guys carrying nooses, bottles of bleach/gasoline/whatever and MAGA hats in a busy place in like Chicago not get noticed at 2 am and manage to walk around without getting beaten into a fine paste? I think all the Smollett siblings have names that start with "J" and most of them are wacky. They had their own show for a year or two back in the 90s and I think one of them was on Sister Kate too. Most of them were child stars for a spell but I think only Jussie and Jurnee were successful. If you remember, Jurnee starred in Eve's Bayou.

Anyway, that's the only reason I know who Jussie is. Empire is a black show that lacks crossover appeal like Martin, The Cosby Show or Living Single. So I'm not surprised if people haven't heard of it.

This never happened. In hundreds of hours of footage, they only found two people, walking away from him on the other side of the street. Then, they found him, Smollett, where he walks out of frame for one minute. A minute later he comes back with a noose around his neck. So apparently, these ski-masked, MAGA supporters, in a majority black city, in -20 degree weather at 2 AM with approximately 0 people around for hours were waiting off camera to beat the shit out of a man in a coat and scarf, in the dark for approximately one minute in the camera's blind spot, which they also knew. Then they proceed to never show up on any other camera, ever.

A letter containing a white powder was sent to the Chicago set of "Empire" days before one of the show's stars, Jussie Smollett, was allegedly attacked by two men on January 29.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told CNN that the letter, received on January 22 at Cinespace Studios, where the show is filmed, prompted a response from the HAZMAT unit.
Guglielmi said authorities determined the powder to be aspirin, but declined to give details on the content of the letter.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the letter, he added.

A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Entertainment, which produces the series, declined to comment when reached by CNN.

In Chicago, police continue their investigation into the alleged attack, which occurred near a lower entrance to the Loews Chicago Hotel.

Smollett said his attackers physically assaulted him and called him homophobic and racist slurs, according to police.

Smollett, who was returning from an early morning trip to a Subway sandwich shop, also reported that one of his attackers put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown substance on him, police said.

Investigators have video of Smollett entering the hotel after the alleged attack with what appears to be a noose around his neck, Guglielmi said.
Police are in possession of the rope and the sweater Smollett was wearing on the night of the attack and are testing the substance, according to Guglielmi.
Smollett and his manager, Brandon Moore, told authorities they were speaking on the phone with each other at the time of the attack, police said.
Guglielmi said because of the financial relationship between the two men, they are trying to verify the call took place and have requested phone records or the physical phones used for the call.

Police were called 30-40 minutes after the attack took place, Guglielmi said.

Detectives have collected and are reviewing more surveillance video from neighboring hotels and apartments, but have not found video of the incident at this point, Guglielmi said.
On Wednesday, police released photos of two individuals who are now wanted for questioning in connection with the case.

In the aftermath of Smollett's assault, his friends, colleagues and peers showed an outpouring of support for the actor, who is an active advocate for the LGBTQ community.
"Our family thanks everyone for their prayers and the huge amount of love he has received. We are thankful to our village for your immense support during this trying time," the statement added. "We are so grateful that God saw him through this cowardly attack alive. Jussie is a warrior whose light cannot be dimmed."

Perhaps the actor himself is concerned about his prospects being tied to a show with falling ratings and wants to raise his profile with these shenanigans.
