'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Jussie Smollett’s lawyers want the disgraced actor immediately sprung from jail, claiming he and his family are the target of “vicious threats,” including a phone call that alluded to the notorious case of a sodomized New York City man.

Smollett’s legal team filed the emergency motion Monday asking the court to postpone his five-month sentence at Chicago’s Cook County Jail while they work to appeal his conviction on five counts of felony disorderly conduct for lying to police.

The filing argues Smollett’s life is at risk because he’s been the target of “vicious threats” on social media and the online hate “no doubt reflects the hatred and wish for physical harm toward Smollett, which he may experience during incarceration.”

One of Smollett’s siblings has also been “bombarded” with disturbing phone calls after providing their phone number as the convicted felon’s emergency contact when he entered the jail system, a rep told The Post.

“I hope what they do to that guy in jail — here’s what they’re going to do, right. They’re going to take a broom handle, and take that little [expletive], shove it in there, and he’s gonna go, ‘[shrieking sound],’” a man was heard saying in the call, per a recording shared by the actor’s team.

Smollett’s attorneys further argued the fallen star’s life is at risk because he has a “compromised immune system” and could die if he catches COVID-19 behind bars. They included an affidavit signed by a doctor to bolster the claim, but it didn’t specify which health conditions Smollett suffers from.

Smollett’s attorneys also griped that he’s in protective custody, which they said previously is a condition they requested but could have “extraordinary damage on his mental health.”

“As a result, any custodial setting poses a safety and health danger to the life of Mr. Smollett,” his attorneys wrote, adding protective custody is a “euphemism” for solitary confinement.

Maybe you should have thought about the extraordinary damage to his mental health before you fucking requested it then you speds. Or maybe he should have thought about the potential damage to his mental health before he committed the crime. oh wait I forgot he a good boi who dindu nuffin.
 
People are threatening his life, allegedly, so the safest thing to do is remove him from protective custody? And let him walk free in public where literally anyone can accost him?

I'm not sure they're thinking this through.

Jussie is playing the long con. Be a big enough asshole and society will eventually decide to look the other way while you are lynched. He will get his hate crime dammit!
