'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I mean, technically, yes, he was. That he paid for it and wanted it to happen to support his narrative is a side fact, I guess.

No, throw his nigger ass in prison, that's where he belongs, he wasted millions of dollars of police money and considering the shithole Chicago is, probably a couple people got killed because the cops were going after his fake bullshit "hate crimes" instead of dealing with actual violent crimes.

lolwut. Those sound pretty contradictory. His entire claim was he was attacked with a weapon from the start wasn't it? How the fuck can you confirm that statement was a lie with count 2 but then say he was telling the truth essentially with count 6

Lets examine this. If Juicy had successfully pulled this off you would have:
  • Rodney King style race riots as the racially tense situation is ignited in Chicago and probably other cities. Almost certainly there would be deaths indirectly resulting.
  • It would further incite hoax racial assaults.
  • Chicago does not have an abundance of police resource compared to the level of crime in that city. Days and weeks of police investigation time wasted on this means other violent criminals remaining free.
  • It would likely enable Kamala Harris to push through her senseless and dangerous "anti-lynching" bill which if you read it, iirc, was an open-ended chance to curtail public gatherings. Few politicians would dare vote against it right after a Black celebrity suffered an actual lynching attempt. Frankly, it would have been a very significant boost to her piss-poor popularity in African American communities. Who knows, might have even tipped her over into getting the candidacy. Don't underestimate the power of a big political stunt and a complicit and toadying media. Reichstag fire, anybody?

No, this was a very dangerous and serious thing he did. We're saved only by his staggering stupidity and poor acting skills. If someone goes to prison for punching another man, how do we rate something like this that could easily have caused far more harm? Plus, lets be honest here, with his privilege and political allies, prison is probably the only punishment that has meaning for him.
 
Are the Nigerian brothers at any legal risk after all this? Obviously they were complicit in something wrong but absent knowing more about them I'd be willing to give them benefit of the doubt about how much of this was really their doing. Certainly they weren't instigators and Jussie was in a position of power. They're not US citizens so Jussie holds a lot of power over them.

Eh, maybe they're awful people like he is but prison sucks. I only even want it for Jussie because I think it's necessary for society that he go.
