'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

With the "starting a conversation" canard that is shortly going to be trotted out, do people ever think about what the "conversation" will be about? Starting a conversation about the commodification of transparently false hate crimes wouldn't exactly be good for leftist twitter given the much larger number of falsified hate crimes compared to ones that actually occurred.

I said some pages back in reference to this that the people who utilize this defense for things like hate crime hoaxes never consider the fact that the conversation they crave had been going on ceaselessly, on account of their own actions, for years. Pay enough attention and you'll notice that conversation is circular: "[x] is a problem -> [x] must be recognized socially as a problem -> now that [x] is agreed as a problem, here is how it must be combatted". The reason this ride never ends is because there's lots of sweet money involved in getting people to tilt at windmills, and even actual issues are being harnessed to line the pockets of shitheads rather than funding new research or devising new solutions.

ETA: one of their strategies is to hold up every individual example as the fact that (x)ism still exists, as if one day it will be eradicated like polio or smallpox. Ignoring the unfortunate fact that these diseases are seeing resurgences (on account of another group notorious for ignoring facts), no side of hate will ever be completely gone and these people secretly love that fact. It means they can always justify their Diversity Department budgets, their Patreon for analytical Tumblr posts, their six-figure speakers fees.

They don’t seem that interested in conversation so much as proving the US is a fascist state. They want to validate their pessimism and their belief that the US is more racist than it actually is.

I can only think of two reasons Jussie thought it was a good idea to try and pull of his hoax in extreme sub-zero weather - the streets would be absolutely deserted of any non-paid witnesses and it wouldn’t be odd for his very black attackers to cover every inch of exposed skin to portray white MAGA dudes. (Though they did still manage to expose their faces on camera. I’m sad they didn’t take the opportunity to attempt white-face make-up.)

Jussie didn’t seem to factor in the sheer absurdity of wannabe MAGA-gangbangers walking totally empty streets to find a POC target at 3 am in 29 below weather.

Since he bothered to pay two guys to purchase props and travel to “attack” him I think the whole “not appearing on any security cams” was actually a big fuck up. Why hire two dudes if you didn’t want some evidence to be picked up on security cameras? Instead of the lack of camera footage being cunning it was the opposite of what they intended because they are a trio of incredibly stupid humans.

Jussie probably intended for the “video footage” of his attack to go viral and leave no doubt as to his story. He must have been so pissed that it failed. I could almost see him throwing a fit finding out the camera they intended the attack performance for wasn’t functional and cops were struggling to find any evidence to two dudes he paid $6k for even existed or were on the streets that night.

I was thinking the same. It's possible he thought it would be on camera but the camera was pointed in a different direction then he thought or the camera was offline because of the cold.

My theory was that "Empire" is ending and he's stuck as the "Jamal Lyon" character. As an avid watcher of Empire: Lee Daniels would write Soap Opera's for all of "Jamal Lyons" beaus. His storyline's in the show were getting tired and played out, and FOX has gone on record in trying to shake up the show. It's been stagnating, and the Jamal Lyon "character"would be on the chopping block. Like the contracts signed for "Empire" also pertain to music as well, and after the show is gone - he wouldn't really have a career left. This literally sounds like an "Empire" telenovela-type plot. A poor young black man walking the streets of chilly Chicago and two maga-terrorists try to lynch him and pour bleach on him, while shouting racial slurs at him.

The show is getting to the point of trying to kill off main characters for rating boosts and some people have hypothesized Smollet's fear of being given a pink slip.

“Personal Trainer” is code in Hollywood for “well-built paid fuck buddy,” just ask John Travolta.

Going to predict once this gets more nasty and drawn out Jussie’s lawyers will start calling him a scorned lover seeking revenge by accusing poor Jussie of perpetuating the attack.

To me it looks like we will soon find out that gay Tupac did indeed make ~$8k in payments to the brothers and this is an attempt to get out in front of the story and justify it. 'No Officer it wasn't a payment for the hoax it was for personal training' I hope he made bank payments of $3.5k and $500 separately for even more laughs.

Yes, throwing in this stuff about him being a personal trainer seems like an obvious CYA story to explain the payments that will easily be proved that Jussie made to them.

That fails to explain why the Nigerians were the ones who bought the rope and brought the rope. That he knew them from the show suggests quite a lot to me.
