'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

It could also just be narcissism. Not going to lie, who Smollett is and what his family is like are a big contributor to why I was skeptical from the beginning. If say, Kenan Thompson made an accusation like this, maybe I'd take it a little more seriously since he doesn't seem to be as much of an attention seeker as most people in the industry. But Smollett and co. are so obsessed with self-promotion and social justice, even just in the back of my head I'm going to be wondering if the attack happened as described or if it happened at all.

Also, it seems like mixed race half-black/half-white SJWs (or one-droppers/fakers like Shaun King) tend toward being really militant, attention-seeking, and abusive, which really figures since there's no way they get as much shit as black people.

I'm white and watched all of half an episode a few years back and I just remember it being the episode where he comes out to his dad. Like the show wasn't good but it's better than the average shit BET would crank out.

That's actually a really good point and I didn't consider that. I don't live in a metro are but it would take me 20-30 minutes to walk to the nearest one, but that really depends on how fast you walk. Based on the map of where the subway, the "persons of interest," and Smollet were, a couple of city blocks isn't going to take much more than that, unless Chicago blocks have gotten much longer since the last time I was there?

So yeah, he's cutting some stops out of his story if he's claiming that coups of blocks is a two hour walk.

According to Google Maps its 0.2 miles and an estimated 4 minutes to walk that distance from Loews hotel. Supposedly he got into Chicago from O'Hare at 'just after midnight'. The attack was supposed to have happened at approximately 2:00am. The location of the attack was about 300ft from the main entrance of his hotel, at 341 Lower North Water St.

What time did he leave for Subway? In that weather and at that time of night it was unlikely they were too busy, so it would not have taken them long for him to get his sandwich - 5-10 minutes at most.

Nashville was a country music drama, so it’s a bit difficult to compare the two. The actors themselves are all pretty sane (though Connie Britton is a bit of an SJW irl). Most of them are in other shows now or tour.

They did have a similar character to Jussie Smollets. One of the country singers was in the closet, but eventually came out. Though his storylines didn’t always focus on him being gay so he was actually somewhat interesting. The actor though is straight and I think is on Greys Anatomy now.

Terrence Howard was on some of the Law and Orders playing himself as an irrational angry black dude.

Is what the police say not newsworthy? Police sources are pretty official. Even if you don't want to believe what they say, surely reporters can, you know, report on what they say.

My impression is that CPD is treading pretty lightly in what they're releasing in an official capacity, but clearly a police force in an ultra-liberal city is out to get the half-black guy.
