Thought it will be more interesting than generic complaints. Japan has way more interesting issues then the billionth muh porn complaints (some of it is generic to the region):
* Gambling everywhere.
* People can't speak English, even if their jobs is to speak to foreigners.
* Pajeets and chinks everywhere both as tourists and service industry.
* Shinto Buddhism is a kooky fake religion that seems more interested in taking your money and creating the image of wealth.
* No animals anywhere besides designer dogs. Even in the countryside I was amazed to see birds. I think I saw one cat the entire trip.
* Constant overcrowding while having beautiful cities/countryside almost no one walks in.
* A lot of things built on looking good rather than being/tasting good even outside tourist traps.
* Atrocious amount of waste.

Don't forget the cults. Shinzo Abe was killed because of his families connection to the Unification church cult which was brought over from South Korea by his grandfather. After his death it turned out that hundreds of members from his party where cult members. Aum Shinrikyo also still exists.

It kinda depends on what you value. What you say is probably to a degree too. We would have to ask Japanese women how they see the situation at hand to find out. But yeah if you hear stories where man are going out during the Exam sessions of schools to go after girls, because then they are even less likely to report the molester, that says a lot.

The economy isn't looking so great either. Huge debt burden and now rising interest rates. 100 % depending on the USA. If the US for whichever reasons decides to go "Nah fuck you", they are truely fucked. They should invest into a Japanese version of AIPAC asap.

Working is also a horrorshow with the timeburden and you can expect that you will have to move to Tokyo if you want to pursue a proper career.

On the other hand you have:

- Low levels of crime overall
- Low levels of small kinds of crimes like littering
- In general the degree of consideration you can expect is always shocking. People do not only think about themselves, but everyone in society
- Living costs, especially outside of Tokyo are affordable
- The country promotes habits and behaviors that enables people to grow old and most of all stay healthy for a long amount of time

My possibly wrong impression is that they shitted it up for tourists and the locals went along with it, like Catholics have gradually embraced "globohomo" a generation behind the church's mercenary embrace of it.

I'm not old enough to have witnessed the shift in Shinto, but I've heard old men complain about it. To them it was real, and now it isn't.

It didn't feel changed, but rather consumerish. Just about everything is monetized - pay for entry (unless it's not a tourist trap), pay to pray, pay for charms, pay for luck, pay for signature you were there. It really removes any feeling of holiness.

And most locations were centred on being big/loud/having many things that might be impressive the first time, but afterwards lose that impression and just look tryhard.

I think the big issue is that you aren't meant to stay in those places unless for extremely rare occasions, you are expected to drop money, bow a few times and leave.

Even the one church I went to in Osaka, where it was just me and the cleaning guy felt more dignified.

These days with very few exceptions. Most societies are expected to 'evolve' into Western style consumerist endstage capitalist postmodernism. This transition shatters the structural, economic, and spiritual framework of societies.

Japan is what happens when you fail the test but in a somewhat different way than Western societies failed it.

A big question in the Western postmodern world is wtf do you do not just as an individual but as a nation once you've industrialized and modernized? So many countries have coasted off the wave of industrialization and modernization. Once you are done its much harder since you have to figure out your place in the world and pivot when necessary as the ground constantly shifts under you. Japan coasted off modernization and then rebuilding and then exporting consumer goods. Now that thats no longer possible they are stuck along with much of the rest of the world. Only the US and China have somewhat managed to navigate the treacherous tides of the postmodern global economy to the present day by leading the tech and AI boom.

To compensate for the malaise, many of the Europe elites have decided for the nihilistic solution of buying votes through expanding entitlements and pitting subgroups of the population against each other and external groups to mantain their power. While Japan has opted for a more traditional patronage model of modest welfare expansion centered on companies and preexisting community. And big tents over attempting to foster factionalism. But neither path actually solves the underlying issue. And each leads to its own problems, anarchy and moochs on one hand ossified corporatism and overwork on the other.


By shattering the traditional family and spiritual structure and incentives combined the dual income assumption of the Western model, along with the aforementioned economic factors, Western postmodern society craters the birthrate and atomizes the community. There are numerous obvious negatives to this other than simply lower labor availability. First and foremost human society not to mention living organisms in general are fundamentally centered around growth and providing for future generations. You remove this, you remove the incentive to do...well anything. Without children nobody really cares that the economy is stagnant let alone how to improve and grow it. In such hyperatomized decaying societies it is no wonder hikkomoris turn to porn and anime.

Instead of using immigration to stopgap the problem like the West, Japan has more successfully managed to preserve its culture by refusing such a tactic. Which gives it certain advantages like stability and other fringe benefits like tourism and hikkomoris rather than mob rapists and decaying ghettos.

But of course neither path actually fixes the underlying issue so you still have your respective problems. Japan's preexisting cultural insularism diverges its path in ways that both help and disadvantage it. But you can totally see where it comes from.
