I've been hearing about this telescope for like 10 years, if it fails now I'm going to beat the shit out of every egghead at nasa for incompetence.

Launch so good it made me listen to the french

It's sad that we couldn't launch it ourselves, but the telescope is so damn big (even with origami folding) they were the only ones with a powerful enough rocket that also had a wide enough payload fairing to hold it. Falcon Heavy has enough power to launch it but the payload fairing is too narrow. It was originally supposed to go up on a Shuttle or Shuttle-Derived-Vehicle, but SLS was so delayed and so over-budget, and Delta IV Heavy ceased production in favor of the now-delayed Vulcan, so Ariane V was the only vehicle that fit the specifications.

Ummm yikes this is named for a Nazi white supremacist antisemitic nazi racist anti-Black fascist anti-marxist homophobic transbigot nonbinary hater QAnon conspiracy Trump lover cultist. They should've named it George Floyd Telescope.

Can't believe it launched. I half expected a senate committee to roll up while they were pumping fuel in and tell them to hold up, we don't have enough money on our card to fill it.

It's feel so surreal, the past 15 years whenever you'd heard about news of the James Webb it was nothing but delays, billions of more dollars added, and failed tests and now it's in space.
There's still this weird subset of people out there hoping it fails catastrophically for the crime of being named after a guy who was insufficiently deferent to faggots.

They get coal for christmas, we get existential knowledge of the universe with a side of dank exoplanets.

100% of people in the past cannot live up to current year liberal standards. These people are just crazed iconoclasts that the only emotion they can ever emulate is envy.

But like I said in a older thread.
James Webb did nothing wrong, go fuck yourselves, and your just trying to erase white people from history.

The rocket is ESA/Arianespace, not NASA. You'd have to beat up the French.
Beating someone who's surrendered is probably a war crime. But NASA would be collateral damage. "Oops." But seriously, Good to see they finally got this fancy project out of the hangar and into space. Best of luck with the deployment & a healthy satellite, We got a telescope for Christmas. And it's a really cool one.

Also, This:

Yeah, I'm used to all these delays that it fell to the background for me. At least it finally launched.
You better work now you heap of metal shit.
The nice thing with NASA projects is that if the mission does get started, these things will exceed the planned lifetime.

Holy shit, the JWST actually got launched. Like I've been hearing about this shit since I was a kid in the 90s into space, and a few times throughout school (from elementary to a goddamn college gen ed) we learned in science class "the new telescope will be up there soon." I feel fucking old that this shit finally went up there. I half expected it to explode or something given how cursed this telescope has been.

July 12, we're getting the first images from the telescope. It's apparently some moving stuff, maybe groundbreaking if we're to take these folks' word for it.
