Italy approves mandatory vaccination program

MILAN — Italy's parliament on Friday gave final approval to making a slate of childhood vaccinations mandatory for school children up to age 16 — a move aimed at countering an anti-vaccine trend that officials have attributed to misinformation.

The packet approved Friday was hotly contested in Italy, where the number of children being vaccinated has sunk since mandatory inoculations were dropped for school admissions nearly 20 years ago.

Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin hailed the 296-92 vote with 15 abstentions as providing "a shield for our children against very serious diseases that are still among us."

But the sharp tones of the debate before the vote didn't dissipate. A top health official in Liguria, Sonia Viale, was quoted as saying the measure marked "a return to fascism," drawing rebukes.

During the vaccine debate, Italian health officials confronted a measles outbreak that drew a U.S. travel warning and a scandal in northern Italy that involved a nurse who claimed for years to have vaccinated children but had not.

Earlier this week, Italy's highest court issued a ruling that found no connection between childhood vaccines and autism, as alleged by a parent seeking legal relief. The alleged correlation has been widely dismissed by the scientific community.

Not only in Italy, but around Europe and the United States, parental fears about vaccines' safety have caused tens of thousands of parents to avoid vaccinating their children. World Health Organization says measles killed 35 children across Europe in the last year, calling it "an unacceptable tragedy," noting that the disease is preventable with a vaccine.

Under Italy's new requirements, parents must present proof of vaccinations to gain admission into preschools, while parents of children of mandatory school age face fines of up to 500 euros ($588) for noncompliance. The requirements cover 10 vaccinations, including diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox.

Officials dropped two diseases from the initial list of 12, meningococcal B and meningococcal C.

I really don't have a problem with this. Anti-vax nutjobs are causing outbreaks everywhere. Some people with immune disorders can't be vaccinated and this puts them at great risk because Sally Smallpox is and Pauly Polio are running around unvaccinated thanks to exceptional parents who think that Jenny McCarthy is a fountain of wisdom on medical matters.

Wish they'd make it mandatory in the US too.

I didn't rate it autistic but lets be fair here, plenty of white people fall for and spread that bullshit, and not just poor and uneducated ones either.

Normally I'm not very keen on governments making our choices for us, but in this one instance I say fuck anti-vaxxers, fuck Jim Carrey's dumbshit wife in particular and fuck polio.

There's not a day that goes by when I'm not thinking this. Seriously, I'm glad some countries get a clue.
 
Italians’ anti-vaccination is hardly surprising.

A flu vaccine made headlines in the country in 2014 when 13 people died after having it injected (Italy ended up banning the vaccine batches). There was other talking in the the media about similar cases of people reacting badly to it in 2012.

IIRC the debating in the Italian legislation made the new proposal have lighter penalties for those who do not get on board when the legislation passed and the original 12 required vaccines were reduced to ten. The amendments would also drop the requirement to report those parents who do not comply to authorities, which could have caused some parents to lose custody of their children. The maximum penalty for older children who are already in school but haven’t been vaccinated was decreased from 7,500 Euros to 2,500 Euros.
