I'd say they're on-par. At least they're not dealing with undocumented Nigerian immigration like Japan
The previous time I visited Taiwan, I saw a group of 4 or 5 Subsharan Africans in a nice part of town, maybe businessmen, and I saw maybe a dozen more as students at a university campus, because the Taiwanese are really struggling to retain the handful of countries that still recognize Taiwan instead of China, including Swaziland and some Caribbean nations, and while the Taiwanese can't offer multi-billion dollar construction mega-projects like the Chinese, they can hand out full-ride scholarships to medical schools and universities to students from those majority black countries that still recognize Taiwan.

I'm literally in Taiwan right now as a student and in my 2 weeks here have counted a total of 3 melanated individuals in their capital city. All the foreign students are other Asians, Europeans, or Americans.

Also again, I can't over state this: I have been to ~20 countries, including some of the countries in Europe with the blandest food imaginable (e.g. Czechia, Norway), and the stuff here is even worse. Americanized Chinese food is less sweet. Today I literally spat out a "spicy" chicken skewer because it was too sweet. The food is like a parody of what you'd imagine Americanized Chinese food to be like. This is the sweetest food I've ever had and it's driving me absolutely insane.

The levels of sweetness they put in their meat dishes is what you'd expect from a degenerate Southerner putting the cheapest, sweetest barbeque sauce on their meat and while the "spicy" food is slightly spicier than what you'd see in Europe it's still seems like it's to the pallet of a white American woman's.

It's like PandaExpress: the Island.

They're more based than China and that's enough to help them eviscerate those commies if they ever invade.

Asians really seem to love ruining all their meat dishes with disgusting sauces. I'd much rather eat "bland" european food than any of their shit.

Also for the record: the student dormitories are on-par with Eastern European dorms but for 2x the price and without even a shared kitchen or WiFi, so you're forced to constantly go out and eat their gross sugary crap and have to buy your own Ethernet cable.

Ok, I never spent much time in Taipei.

Southern Taiwan is where the true Taiwanese culture and cuisine (and I guess the melinated students) are at.

Taipei is a homogenized melting pot of Mainland Chinese, assimilated Taiwanese, and foreign influences, and everything is more expensive too. I guess it's easier on foreigners though, because it's more sanitized and accessible, especially the Taipei night markets, which are much more tourist friendly than the southern counterparts.

Until the KMT took over in 1945, the previous 3 centuries of Chinese cultural development was centered on the southern cities of the island, and the food there was very good I found, especially the seafood and the day markets and night markets. I don't know if I would recommend Tainan and Kaohsiung and Pingtung/Kenting to a vehicle-less tourist though. If you have a motorbike, it's a lot more doable, but otherwise there will be a lot of walking in the summer heat and taking taxi and bus and train.

In Southern Taiwan, when you go to the day markets to buy groceries, they will screw you on pricing if you speak Mandarin and not Minnan/Fujian style dialect to them.

I didn't eat much land-meats when I was there, but they do have a bit of a sweet tooth for desserts and pastries. The whole island used to be a giant sugarcane plantation in the Japanese colonial era, so they never lacked for sugar, even when it was an underdeveloped rural shithole. Even 100 years ago, the regular people could all afford to buy brown sugar and they supposedly cooked and ate these egg-less "black sugar cakes" as a kind of austerity dessert food, but I thought it was actually pretty good.
