The world was exposed to Splatoon 3’s announcer trio Deep Cut, last week, with the fanbase immediately falling in love with Frye, Shiver, and (my personal fav) Big Man. And I, along with every other trans nerd I know on Twitter, took one look at Shiver and went “wow, Gender.” That’s kinda just how our brains work at this point. You get one character who looks even a little GNC and suddenly people are color-picking pride flags for them. But it turns out that the Gender radar may not be us grasping at straws but a genuine case of inclusion, because evidence suggests that Shiver may in fact be truly, canonically non-binary.

This mostly comes from how the text in multiple languages is very deliberately crafted to avoid gendering Shiver in any particular way. This is particularly noteworthy for languages like French and Spanish, where dialogue was written very carefully to avoid any conjugation or such that would explicitly gender Shiver. The Japanese text, meanwhile, avoids giving Shiver any first-person pronouns (which are usually gendered, like “atashi” being feminine and “boku” being masculine). Frye and Big Man meanwhile are gendered pretty explicitly in multiple languages, which makes the coyness of Shiver’s gender all the more interesting.

Obviously, we’ll have to wait for the game to come out before confirmation of anything, but it would check out – Splatoon as a franchise has been driven by a younger generation of Nintendo developers, utilizing contemporary cultural sensibilities that other properties of the Big N aren’t as up to date on, and in a world drenched in fashion and style a non-binary character fits perfectly. Fans have practically accepted it as fact already, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly ecstatic.

found out that the Shiver from the new splatoon band is never referred to by any gendered terms in any language, including the ones with grammatical gender which all go out of their way to use odd or passive language forms in order to leave it unspecified. good they're a mood pic.twitter.com/ht8sDEq0Op

Shiver wouldn’t be the first non-binary character in a Nintendo game – just this month Xenoblade Chronicles 3 released with a minor character, Jupiter, who’s non-binary. And right before that, the remake of Live A Live (developed by Square but published by Nintendo outside of Japan) referred to the robot character Cube with they/them pronouns. Trans characters in general extend back decades in the Nintendo canon (though whether or not characters like Birdo are/were “good rep” is a subject for much discourse). That said, if Shiver is n-b, then they’re the most prominent Nintendo character thus far to fall outside the gender binary, and would be well worth celebrating.

We’ll just have to see for certain when Splatoon 3 launches on Friday, September 9th.

When I first saw this character I couldn't believe Nintendo actually did this. This is seriously one of the most ugly looking character designs I've seen in all my life.

Seriously I want to know who in the fuck came up with this.
People have made fun of the last idol character since she had a bit of a big forehead, so the developers reasonably thought for the next game's idols, "what if we made one of the star's forehead like Pearl's, but BIGGER?"

Based Japs: Fuukachan kawaii! I am glad my fellow Glorious Yamato People already drew porn of her!

Genderpeople: Wow, they is totally not a female at all! They is literally me!

This sounded like complete retardation so I bothered to check the Spanish and Japanese versions, they have pretty straightforward dialogues and there isn't any trickery involved to hide anything. It's just that Shiver herself is never the topic of conversation (the characters keep talking about the game), so she is never addressed specifically or even addresses herself. (The manta guy says "you two" a couple of times but that is pretty normal).

And for the linguistic killshot: She is called Fuuka and Megan in those languages, which are girl names. It's pretty dishonest to not mention it when that pretty much disproves the whole thing right there.

I wonder why these people waste their time writing such poorly researched and deceitful nonsense, or even just waste time thinking about it, when it is going to be blown out of the water (get it) when the game releases anyways. I know the answer is that they are mentally ill but that's not an excuse to be retarded.

This is also pretty conclusive.

Nintendo of America did this to a Xenoblade 3 character also, where she has they/them pronouns for no reason but in the Japanese version she doesn't.
They did it in Fire Emblem Fates when they tweeked the S-rank title for Soleil's partner, only Forrest gets listed as boyfriend or whatever, just because she flirts with girls in what's an obvious character joke, as her father does the same and mostly gets shot down.

NoA clearly has troons/troon sympathizers willing to fuck over localizations for their agenda.

I remember back in 2014-2015 when there was controversy around NoA censorship and once people brought that to attention they stopped that.

During 2016 till Reggie left we had a golden age of Nintendo localization being accurate. This agenda driven garbage localization has seemed to escalate ever since Reggie left, really makes you wonder if there is more to our boy Reggie leaving than we thought.

Saying Shiver is nb or gender neutral is a massive cope. Look at her:

She has defined hips, wears a bandeau to cover breasts, and even her voice is feminine. They're only saying she's nb because she wears edgy clothing and these kids with nothing to do want her to be her role model.

I don't recall any sort of fuckery in Xenoblade 3 besides the boring plot. But I might have seen it but not noticed it because I was in a 30 hour binge at the time.

I HATE TOMBOY ERASURE

She doesn't give off any tomboyish aesthetic or identity, but then again I haven't been paying attention to anything related to Splatoon 3 so I'm not well-informed.

Strangely, that's still relevant since the article author upholds the meme of hoping for an official Mother 3 localization (despite the fact that the fanmade patch is so superlative and done by a professional that they even fixed bugs in the game), and Kumatora is characterized as tomboyish... while having been raised by the flamboyant and easily-able-to-be-argued-as-nonbinary (they're described in-game as "neither man nor beast, neither male nor female") Magypsies.

That's the thing though, the majority of kids/teens who claim to be part of the non-binary umbrella all happen to mostly be young girls. Notice how it's never male characters getting this treatment.

She's not tomboyish at all - she's wearing HEELS. Frye, the idol with the fivehead, looks and acts more boyish. Just look at how she dances compared to Shiver (0:19)

Shiver carries a Japanese fan and uses it to accentuate her gestures. She definitely looks like the poised, graceful version of the two (Big Man is an enigma and only exists to make splatfest 3 way fights, you can't convince me otherwise) and I bet one of her iterations had her in a full blown kimono.
Splatoon's idol duality has always been a modern take on the manzai comedy duo: the hype, excitable girl thats a bit boyish and honestly a fucking retard as the boke (Callie, Pearl) and the calm, refined girl that's on the demure side as the tsukkomi (Marie, Marina). This could just be a coincidence, but her fan could also solidify her role as a tsukkomi because it resembles a pleated paper fan that's traditionally used by the tsukkomi to whack the boke on the head with in manzai.
These dunces only want her to be nonbinary because shes cool and mysterious. I seriously don't understand how someone could look at her and think "yea idk if that's a dude or a chick!" The Splatoon fandom has always been full of retarded kids/young adults though.

Regardless the new girls suck.

I miss the OG queens of Splatoon.
