The world was exposed to Splatoon 3’s announcer trio Deep Cut, last week, with the fanbase immediately falling in love with Frye, Shiver, and (my personal fav) Big Man. And I, along with every other trans nerd I know on Twitter, took one look at Shiver and went “wow, Gender.” That’s kinda just how our brains work at this point. You get one character who looks even a little GNC and suddenly people are color-picking pride flags for them. But it turns out that the Gender radar may not be us grasping at straws but a genuine case of inclusion, because evidence suggests that Shiver may in fact be truly, canonically non-binary.

This mostly comes from how the text in multiple languages is very deliberately crafted to avoid gendering Shiver in any particular way. This is particularly noteworthy for languages like French and Spanish, where dialogue was written very carefully to avoid any conjugation or such that would explicitly gender Shiver. The Japanese text, meanwhile, avoids giving Shiver any first-person pronouns (which are usually gendered, like “atashi” being feminine and “boku” being masculine). Frye and Big Man meanwhile are gendered pretty explicitly in multiple languages, which makes the coyness of Shiver’s gender all the more interesting.

Obviously, we’ll have to wait for the game to come out before confirmation of anything, but it would check out – Splatoon as a franchise has been driven by a younger generation of Nintendo developers, utilizing contemporary cultural sensibilities that other properties of the Big N aren’t as up to date on, and in a world drenched in fashion and style a non-binary character fits perfectly. Fans have practically accepted it as fact already, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly ecstatic.

found out that the Shiver from the new splatoon band is never referred to by any gendered terms in any language, including the ones with grammatical gender which all go out of their way to use odd or passive language forms in order to leave it unspecified. good they're a mood pic.twitter.com/ht8sDEq0Op

Shiver wouldn’t be the first non-binary character in a Nintendo game – just this month Xenoblade Chronicles 3 released with a minor character, Jupiter, who’s non-binary. And right before that, the remake of Live A Live (developed by Square but published by Nintendo outside of Japan) referred to the robot character Cube with they/them pronouns. Trans characters in general extend back decades in the Nintendo canon (though whether or not characters like Birdo are/were “good rep” is a subject for much discourse). That said, if Shiver is n-b, then they’re the most prominent Nintendo character thus far to fall outside the gender binary, and would be well worth celebrating.

We’ll just have to see for certain when Splatoon 3 launches on Friday, September 9th.

You guys should check out the NintendoLife article on this "news", comments are a graveyard lmao.

Fuck video games.

Chinks, niggers, downies and non-binaries.

Why.

Gender? Sir, Shiver is clearly the slant eye octopus waifu character. Your attention should be on Frye potentially being the bastard lovechild of Freddy freaker and gollum instead of gender shit.

and in a world drenched in fashion and style a non-binary character fits perfectly.
Also props tothe writer for literally de-legitamizing their own argument about the legitamacy of gendershit with this phrase

I don't want people like this near MOTHER 3's "localization". Fuck that shit don't you fucking touch the funny magypsies.
All three look retarded enough to have extra pronouns.
Don't be doing The BIG MAN dirty like that. He's literally named "the big man". why do you think he'd have extra pronouns? Dude's a man, man.

OF COURSE THEY'RE GONNA TRY TO SAY THE CUTER LOOKING ONE IS A FAGGOT TRANNY ENBY THING.

IS THE MASSIVE BLACK FIVE-HEAD NOT WORTHY OF BEING NON BINARY? FUCK. Don't worry I'm laughing not actually MATI here.

Someone in one of the twitter posts said that Shiver uses "feminine" pronouns. Got redirected to a tumblr post where someone autistic enough noticed that in a tiny speech bubble in one of the adverts, they used "uchi." Partially it's Japanese moonspeak fuckery that most people aren't going to catch on immediately, but it also seems to be yet another case of gender-obsessed idiots putting what they think and feel onto a character because, again, Shiver is "cute" and already has the non-binary/asexual color palette going on.

What the fuck do these people do, just sit around and wait for fictional characters to give genders to?

I seriously hope the big N isn't going down this road, so fast at least.

Ugh Don't fucking remind me. I'm still holding out hope that is all the western side's doing if official. Of all the game series why the fuck did it have to be Xeno. :/

Non-binary I don't know but fugly yes. Did Nintendo outsource the character designs to a western studio?

That's borderline impossible in French. There aren't a variety of gendered first-person pronouns like there are in Japanese, there's only one way per tense to conjugate a verb according to the person, and the gender of possessive articles (e.g. mon/ma/mes, ton/ta/tes, son/sa/ses) is contingent on the word they're attached to and not the person speaking. Even French possessive pronouns (mien/mienne/miens, tien/tienne/tiens, sien/sienne/siens), are determined by what they refer to and not the person possessing what is being referred to.

The Japanese text, meanwhile, avoids giving Shiver any first-person pronouns
The Japanese normally omit pronouns given enough preceding context.

They fucking removed the cartoon cephalopod eyebags on the octopus so it now looks like one of those cursed images where they remove an iconic character feature. I thought it wasweird whenthey changedthe playable octoarian's face from the og purple eyebags with the battle scar shit under them to basically just the same as the squids without a middle portion in splatoon 2, but now with this new one they're just... GONE.

What's strange to me is these new characters have that weird color shading ontheir flesh as a texture that previously was only a thing in the 2d concept art for the splatoon games. it's not like they couldn't do it before graphically which makes it even odder to me cause it seems it's only these 2 that get that treatment as well as a character from the splatoon 1 promo art thats now showing up in 3 and has been localized with a really shitty generic non-pun name.

From what I understand it's mostly Nintendo of America "localizing" in gender specials when they think they can get away with it. Nintendo may throw in some token Bi chicks or something. Sometimes it like the creepy goth chick obsessed with your character in Fire Emblem, so it's not portrayed as normal.

If it's something outside of Japanese cultural norms, it's probably a bad localization change.

There's probably not gonna be another opportunity for me to say this but

When I first saw this character I couldn't believe Nintendo actually did this. This is seriously one of the most ugly looking character designs I've seen in all my life.

Seriously I want to know who in the fuck came up with this.
