Is Soylent really that bad?

400cal for 20g of protein isn't terrible but it's not good either. If you're living a healthy lifestyle, you generally want to aim for a gram of (complete) protein per pound of bodyweight. If you were a 200lb man and Soylent was your baseline, that'd work out to 4000 calories, at which point you wouldn't be 200lbs for long; or far more realistically, falling short of that protein target. Additionally, consuming more than ~30g of protein in a sitting has an anabolic effect that you'd be missing out on.

You want to aim for at least 30 grams of complete protein per meal at 10-15 calories per gram, which isn't difficult with animal sources. Just drink milk + whey and take a multivitamin.

ETA: It's also pretty well documented that soy has a phytoestrogenic effect, which is to say it mimics estrogen. I've heard arguments from both sides as to whether this is a bad thing -- something to do with the phytoestrogen being less potent than endogenous estrogen, and blocking estrogen by binding to the same receptors or something like that, but I would think that would just lead to upregulation of estrogen receptors if it was an appreciable difference. I don't know, I haven't paid attention to it because I simply have no reason to because whey exists, and the soyboy stereotype exists for a reason.

If you cant tell when you're hungry I think there is something more at play than your diet. But I'm not some nutritionist, so take my opinion with a grain of salt (on a nice cut of meat).
