My grandmother used to live in Singapore and she would go to the beach and collect the shells. However, oftentimes, there were little creatures still living in them, so she would just take them home and boil them first, thus killing the aforementioned poor little creatures in the process.

I remember when I heard first heard this as a Small Miriam, and thinking this was like something a witch would do.

Did she eat them next?

I think some of it depends if you're removing the shell collecting, by itself, from the umbrella hobby of beachcombing/mudlarking.

Picking up interesting objects from the beach is a unisex hobby, because it's best done while 50+ years old and wearing an unfashionable puffer jacket and toque.
