Are any of the origins of Christmas real?

Paganism already provided the format for a winter holiday at the solstice and long before Baby Jesus in a manger and a wandering star hijacked proceedings. All the rest evolved through European tradition and superstition.

It hasn't turned out bad, but let's not kid ourselves that Christmas has anything remotely to do with Baby Jesus and a donkey.
