Yes, by not ahnihilating Palestine completely and deporting every Arab Israeli to any other Arab state. Everyone who isn't paid not to hates Israel and Jews, in the coming decades they'll either be outbred or removed from Israel by Arabs.

Currently 1/5 Israelis are Arabs and they're surrounded by hostile states with public opinion in the west turning against them. It's only a matter of time before they're stateless again.

Rational is really a buzzword. Because different positions have their own logic and goal. For example the Likud Party, the Likud Government, the state bureaucracy, the Military and the economic elites in Israel might have different goals. Usually people in power have a ton of advisors doing their thinking for them, they too can work with junk data and false assumptions and even with flawless logic you can end up in dumb places.

The Arab Israeli conflict was always a spectacle for the outsiders, good to keep on TV and far away enough so you can cheer on a team without actually having to do anything.

In a way Israel seems to be in a position where they want to solidify their holdings, because Iran via Syria and Lebanon are standing on their border. While Iran is not stupid and will not just outright attack Israel they can have more pressure that way. In a way the past rational behavior came back to haunt. At the time it made sense to get rid of the Arab Nationalist states, the problem is they helped to contain Iran too. With them gone the power vacuum has been exploited by the Persians who went from an isolated revolutionary state to regional power.

Palestinians are in their way for both Nation building and National security reasons. These low intensity wars are both tests of capability, will and reminding the Arabs who is the boss.
The current version of Hamas is much more sensible and professional. They have better arms and don't put their kids up on busess to be walking bombs like they used to in the last Intifada.

they were rational in the sense that they followed a pretty simple policy of direct retaliation: pali militants shoot rockets into tel aviv -> kike air force throws bombs into gaza. once the rockets stop, the bombs stop.

the more interesting part is the bigger picture: is israel acting rational in its approach to the wider conflict, and how will its approach play out in the long run? this is more questionable in my opinion.

right now their approach is this:
>arabs in israel itself have full citizens rights
>arabs in gaza are mostly left alone but their territory is sealed off by land and sea blockade
>arabs in the west bank are slowly driven back as jew settlers claim more and more land

in my opinion this is not sustainable. it makes all the arabs super angry without actually diminishing the danger they pose. they are perpetually kept in a state of almost-war but at the same time are allowed to continuously expand their numbers and carry out agitation/propaganda ops as much as they want. this keeps the threat of war alive forever.

Are you asking if they're being rational, or if they're pursuing a strategy that will benefit them in the long run? People can act rationally and either make mistakes in the process of reasoning, or arrive at rationally-sound conclusions that nonetheless prove to be counterproductive. (for example, I think many socialists prior to the mid-20th century were genuinely rational people, the problem was that they were stupid, and made a lot of bad predictions and errors in judgement. Meanwhile, I think many liberals were genuinely rational people, too, but in following the cateogrical imperatives of their ethical and epistemological system - for example, granting socialists freedom of speech and allowing them to move about in polite society - liberalism sowed the seeds of its own destruction)

Also, as @BlamoPlasmo points out, there are many different groups within Israel, each of whom will have different goals and interests. Whether Israel is acting rationally, or whether Israeli policy will prove to be productive, really depends on which Israelis we're talking about.
